Kitchen extract cleaning in Roedean

Kitchen extract cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Roedean

Few kitchens can stop cooking for a day so the extract can be cleaned. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. Equipment is switched off and left to cool, the area is sheeted, and the kitchen is handed back ready to cook. The work covers canopies and hoods, extract fans and plenums and filters, and people most often call us about proof of cleaning requested by an insurer and an extract that no longer clears the smoke. Kitchen extract cleaning, TR19 cleaning, extraction cleaning: whatever you call it, in Roedean it means the same thing to us: the whole system, cleaned and certificated.

Most kitchens in Roedean fall into one of BESA’s three bands: every 3 months for 12–16 hours, every 6 months for 6–12 hours and every 12 months for 2–6 hours, with grease readings setting the real interval.

Somewhere as small as Roedean, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts
  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Wash or exchange the filters often

We hand the kitchen back clean, with the sheeting removed and waste taken away. Waste grease and water are contained and removed, and equipment can be switched back on once we’ve gone.

Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

Part by part

Grease filters

A filter that’s missing or bent lets grease straight past. Each filter is checked as it goes back in, and flag any that don’t.

Ductwork and risers

Grease builds up most where the duct turns. We test at points like these before and after cleaning, so the report shows the difference.

What we’re called out for in Roedean

Hours of cooking are the biggest factor. Under BESA guidance, heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means a clean at least every 3 months, moderate use every 6 months and light use every 12. Those are minimums, and grease readings can show a kitchen needs cleaning sooner.

Clients typically contact us when they notice one of these:

  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
  • A system with no record of a TR19 clean
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke

Where a hall near St Mark's Church, or anywhere in Roedean, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether a written report and pictures are included
  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours

Our hiring checklist

Roedean kitchens: local notes

Roedean is within about 1 mile of the coast. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. There are about 70 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 26 takeaways across Roedean and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Wherever food is cooked under a canopy, the extract above it gathers grease and needs cleaning on a schedule. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Roedean. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like French Convalescent Home about 0.5 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Mark's CofE Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Roedean is about 2 miles east of Carlton Hill, in Brighton and Hove. Whether your site is in the middle of Roedean or further out, we cover kitchen extract cleaning for every kind of premises, from small sites to large estates. Across Brighton and Hove, we cover 30 places, Roedean among them.

What happens on the day

We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your pictures. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Roedean can be planned properly.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
  2. We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
  3. We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
  4. The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Why act early in Roedean

A clogged extract does not only raise the fire risk. Blocked filters and narrowed ducts slow the airflow, leaving the kitchen hot and smoky and the fan strains to keep up. Smells, dripping grease and condensation often follow. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Roedean rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Common questions in Roedean

Who is the fire and rescue service for Roedean?

Fire safety enforcement in Roedean is handled by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Can a school canteen extract in Roedean be done out of term time?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 26 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Roedean, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.

What do you do with what you remove?

It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.

Do we have to close the kitchen for the clean?

We work around your hours. Overnight, weekend and between-service cleans are all possible, so you do not lose a service.
