Kitchen extract cleaning across Fairlight

How we handle kitchen extract cleaning in Fairlight

A closed kitchen is not earning, so the timing of a clean matters. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. With the equipment off and cool and the area sheeted, we clean and hand the kitchen back ready for the next service. If you are dealing with fat running down the canopy edge and a kitchen taken over without any extract records, we can help, from plenums and filters, extract fans and canopies and hoods onwards. Hood cleaning is where most enquiries from Fairlight start: a clean that goes past the canopy into the duct and fan, backed by a certificate.

Grease that collects out of sight, behind the filters and along the duct, is what insurers and fire officers worry about, which is why a TR19® clean in Fairlight goes well beyond the canopy.

Somewhere as small as Fairlight, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Fairlight

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

How the job changes from site to site

Canopy and plenum

Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. Both are scraped and degreased inside and out, including the filter housing.

Ductwork and risers

Vertical risers carry the air up through the building, and grease often collects at the bottom of them. They’re cleaned through access points along their height.

Common questions in Fairlight

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Fairlight?

That is East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Will you come out to Fairlight?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Fairlight included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Which sectors do you work in?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

Is a quote from pictures possible?

Usually, yes. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and a fixed quote normally follows within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we’ll say so.

How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?

Length of duct, grease levels and access all affect it. Most jobs take one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.

What information do you need?

Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Aftercare tips

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
  • Report grease drips, smells or fan noise straight away
  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts

The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date is not missed.

Book the next clean before the last one runs out. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.

The process

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Fairlight and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
  2. We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
  3. With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
  4. The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
  5. Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Ask for a quote

To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll typically have a quote within one working day.

Advice

Leave it or put it right?

Leaving the clean until the next refit doesn’t make the grease go away. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Regular cleans keep each visit shorter. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we’ll talk you through it.

Grease, kitchens and Fairlight

Fairlight is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency records list about 6 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 6 sandwich bars and takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Fairlight. Any of them cooking under a canopy is sending grease into its ductwork every service. Fire safety in Fairlight falls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Where a hall near The Parish Church of St Andrew, or anywhere in Fairlight, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Term dates shape school work: for a school like The Hastings Academy, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Conquest Hospital about 3.4 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Fairlight is about 4 miles east of Hastings, in East Sussex. We provide kitchen extract cleaning for commercial premises of every kind in Fairlight and the rest of East Sussex. Our East Sussex coverage runs to 289 places, Fairlight among them. Maidstone is in our area too, about 27 miles from Fairlight.

We cover every part of the TN35 postcode area for kitchen extract cleaning and the roads nearby. Close by, we work in Fairlight Cove (1 mile east), Friar's Hill (1 mile north), Guestling (1 mile north-west), Bachelor's Bump (1 mile west) and Guestling Green (1 mile north-west). Further out, we also cover Hastings (4 miles west), Bexhill-on-Sea (8 miles west), St Leonards (4 miles west), Hastings Old Town (3 miles south-west), Belmont (3 miles south-west) and Langney (15 miles west).

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Extraction that can’t cope with the cooking because of its design
  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
  • A duct that’s holed or coming apart

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.
