What affects the quote in Eastbourne

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The number of sites or systems
  • How big the system is
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before we start.

Kitchen extract cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Eastbourne

Many insurers ask for proof that the extract has been cleaned to TR19, and a claim can be refused or reduced without it. For a kitchen in Eastbourne, our certificate and photo report give you that record for the maintenance log. Common call-outs are for an extract that no longer clears the smoke and ductwork thick with old, hardened grease, across vertical risers, extract fans and discharge points. Canopy cleaning, extract cleaning and duct cleaning are often used to mean the same thing, but a proper TR19® clean in Eastbourne covers all of it, from the hood to the fan.

BESA sets minimum intervals by hours of cooking a day: every 3 months for 12–16 hours, every 6 months for 6–12 hours and every 12 months for 2–6 hours, adjusted by what the grease readings show.

In the busier parts of Eastbourne, kitchens are often on the ground floor with flats or offices above, with risers that run up the back of the building to roof level. A riser needs proper access to be cleaned top to bottom, and any section we can’t reach is recorded on the report.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Honest limits

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • A fan motor that has burnt out
  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
  • Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think before you book.

What the work covers

  • Extract fans
  • Discharge points

  • Horizontal duct runs

  • Plenums and filters

What we are called out for in Eastbourne

How fast grease builds up depends mostly on how long the kitchen cooks each day. Under BESA guidance, heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means a clean at least every 3 months, moderate use every 6 months and light use every 12. They are minimums: measured grease levels set the real interval.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Grease drips onto cooking equipment
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke
  • Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer
  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Eastbourne District General Hospital is the nearest hospital to Eastbourne, about 0.9 miles west.

Questions to ask before you book

Why deal with it now?

TR19® is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. It puts a duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and in a kitchen that means keeping extract grease under control. TR19 is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers can all ask for records.

The cost depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

What the work involves, part by part

Extract fan and discharge

Some systems have attenuators to cut noise, and they hold grease. Where they can be cleaned, they are, and the report notes anything that can’t.

Grease filters

Baffle filters are cleaned as part of every TR19 clean, and put back so they seat correctly. Damaged ones are noted on the report.

Questions from Eastbourne

Which council inspects kitchens in Eastbourne?

Food hygiene inspections in Eastbourne are carried out by Eastbourne council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Is kitchen extract cleaning any different in a coastal place like Eastbourne?

It can. Salt air reaches Eastbourne, which is within about 1 mile of the coast, and it speeds up rust. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

What is TR19?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we will advise on what to do next.

Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?

Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.

How the visit works

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the kitchen extract cleaning, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system. Phased working suits larger sites in a place the size of Eastbourne, with each part handed back before the next starts.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
  2. Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
  3. We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
  4. The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Advice

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Kitchen extract cleaning in Eastbourne: the local picture

The coast is only about 1 mile from Eastbourne. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Look up Eastbourne on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 217 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 69 takeaways and sandwich shops in Eastbourne and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Each one that cooks under a canopy has an extract system that collects grease and needs regular cleaning. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Eastbourne. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

School kitchens, at schools like Stafford Junior School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Commuter trade near Hampden Park station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
