Kitchen extract cleaning in Cliffe

Every time food is cooked, warm vapour carries fat up into the extract. As it cools, it clings to the inside of the ductwork and keeps building. That layer will burn, and cleaning the whole system is how you keep it under control. We’re often asked to deal with a new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history and heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs, on discharge points, extract fans and plenums and filters. When a restaurant in Cliffe asks for duct cleaning, it’s nearly always the kitchen extract they mean, and that’s our main job: canopy to fan, to TR19® Grease.

Grease that collects out of sight, behind the filters and along the duct, is what insurers and fire officers worry about, which is why a TR19® clean in Cliffe goes well beyond the canopy.

In a small place like Cliffe, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Questions from Cliffe

Which fire authority looks after Cliffe?

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Cliffe. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Cliffe?

Kitchens in Cliffe are inspected by Medway council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Some photos and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we will ask.

What do I get after the clean?

Yes, a TR19 certificate, along with a photo report. It records what was cleaned, what wasn’t accessible and the recommended next clean date.

Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?

We’re members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we are fully insured.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What a clean will not put right

We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Faulty fire dampers in the duct
  • A fan motor that has burnt out
  • A duct that’s holed or coming apart

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Plenums and filters
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Vertical risers
  • Discharge points
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Extract fans

How it works

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system. A few photos of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Cliffe.

  1. We survey the system first, from your pictures and details or on a site visit.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
  4. The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
  5. We test again, photograph the result and issue your TR19 certificate and photo report.

Getting ready for the visit

Advice

Keeping the system healthy

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
  • Book the next clean before the date on the report
  • Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
  • Keep the cleaning records where you can find them

You get a photo report after every clean. Before and after photos show each part of the system, and lists what was cleaned, any areas we couldn’t reach and the date the next clean is due.

Report drips, smells or a noisy fan early. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.

Grease, kitchens and Cliffe

Cliffe lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 pubs and bars across Cliffe and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Environmental health officers from Medway council inspect food businesses in Cliffe. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

School kitchens, at schools like St Helen's Church of England Primary School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A hospital like French Hospital, about 4.9 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Cliffe (Temple Manor is about 4.9 miles south), fitting access panels needs care.

Cliffe is about 5 miles north of Rochester, in Medway. Whatever kind of site you run in Cliffe, we can take on kitchen extract cleaning. We can work out of hours so trading is not interrupted. Larger places within reach include Gillingham (7 miles south-east), Chatham (7 miles south), Rochester (5 miles south), Rainham (8 miles south-east), Strood (5 miles south) and Luton (6 miles south).

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

What affects the quote in Cliffe

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The size of the system
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • A few general shots of the system
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Different parts, different methods

Schools, hospitals and care homes

In a care home or hospital, the kitchen may cook every day of the year. Cleans are planned between meals or overnight with as little disruption as possible.

Canopy and plenum

The plenum is out of sight behind the filters, so it’s easy to forget. With the filters out, the plenum is scraped and degreased.

What happens if it’s left?

Putting it off simply moves the grease further down the duct. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Staying on a regular cycle keeps each clean manageable. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
