Kitchen extraction cleaning in Blackness
Kitchen extract cleaning for Blackness, with a survey first and a report with pictures at the end. Call for a fixed quote.
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
- Stale cooking odours from the system
What the work involves, part by part
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Grills, fryers and woks send a lot of fat into the extract, and measured readings show whether the minimum interval is enough.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be booked when the kitchen is closed. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.
How we handle kitchen extract cleaning in Blackness
We treat an extract system much as a doctor treats a patient: diagnose with a survey, treat with a thorough clean, then sign it off. The sign-off is a TR19 certificate with a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers canopies and hoods, plenums and filters and extract fans, and common reasons people get in touch are a kitchen with no current TR19 certificate and years of baked-on grease in the ducts. Canopy cleaning, extract cleaning and duct cleaning are often used to mean the same thing, but in Blackness, as everywhere, the insurer wants the full system cleaned, not just the hood.
Access decides how thorough a clean can be. Where a duct run has no panels, we say so on the report and can fit new ones.
Somewhere as small as Blackness, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

The process
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Blackness.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.
Before we arrive
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
Getting a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Looking after it afterwards
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
- Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit
- Don’t let the canopy gutters overflow
You leave with a date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date isn’t missed.
Keep the fan on throughout service. Cooking with the extract off lets grease and heat settle in the canopy, and the next clean has more to do.
Why act early in Blackness
There’s no law that names TR19, but the Fire Safety Order 2005 still applies. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and in a kitchen that means keeping extract grease under control. Cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve done it. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.

For landlords and multi-site operators
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
Questions from Blackness
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Blackness?
Blackness is in the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Will you come out to Blackness?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Blackness is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
How often does a kitchen extract system need cleaning?
The minimum is set by BESA guidance on daily use, from 3-monthly to 12-monthly. Kitchens that fry or grill a lot may need cleaning sooner, which grease thickness testing will show.
What should I send you?
A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. We will ask for anything else we need.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, our work sits within an independently audited scheme. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we’re fully insured.
How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before we start.
When do you clean the extract?
When the kitchen is closed, at whatever time suits you. We need the equipment cool, and we leave the kitchen ready to cook.
Which sectors do you work in?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.
Kitchen extracts in Blackness
The coast is only about 3 miles from Blackness. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency records list about 21 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 8 takeaways in and around Blackness, up to about a mile and a half out. Those that fry, grill or roast under a canopy need their extracts cleaned at intervals set by how long they cook. It’s Wealden council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Blackness. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
School kitchens, at schools like Stone Cross School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Historic houses near Blackness, such as Michelham Priory about 4.4 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

What a clean won’t put right
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or leaking (that’s for a ductwork contractor)
- An undersized canopy or fan
- Fire dampers that won’t close (that needs damper testing and remedials)
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What we’re called out for in Blackness
Hours of cooking are the biggest factor. Under BESA guidance, heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means a clean at least every 3 months, moderate use every 6 months and light use every 12. They are minimums: measured grease levels set the real interval.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- A new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history
- A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
- Grease dripping from the canopy or filters
- Grease smells coming from the extract
Where a hall near St Luke's Church, or anywhere in Blackness, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
