Grease trap cleaning in Whitwell

Whitwell kitchens: local notes

In Whitwell, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Isle of Wight council. They look at the cleanliness of the whole kitchen: walls, floors, ceilings and equipment. A cleaning log that includes deep cleans and grease trap visits shows the work is planned.

If you run event catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Sheat Manor is about 4.4 miles north), a deep clean before or after the busy season is worth planning. Where a church or community hall near Church of St. Mary and St. Radegund, or anywhere in Whitwell, has a kitchen used by volunteers, a periodic deep clean keeps it ready for the next event.

Whitwell is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Wherever you are in the PO38 postcode area, we can carry out grease trap cleaning at your premises. Our area takes in 125 places across the Isle of Wight, large and small. There’s also a page for Portsmouth, about 17 miles away.

We cover every part of PO38 for grease trap cleaning and the streets around it. You will find streets such as High Street, Bannock Road and Nettlecombe Lane, all of which we cover for grease trap cleaning. If your site is just outside Whitwell, we cover Nettlecombe (1 mile north-east), Bierley (1 mile west), Southford (1 mile north-west), Niton (1 mile south-west) and St Lawrence (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Newport (7 miles north), Ryde (10 miles north-east), Cowes (11 miles north), Sandown (6 miles north-east), Shanklin (4 miles north-east) and East Cowes (11 miles north). If your site is somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

About our grease trap cleaning in Whitwell

Think of the grease trap as a filter for the kitchen’s drains. Kept clean, it does its job quietly but left too long, it causes trouble. A regular clean keeps it healthy. If you have drains that gurgle and bubble and grease setting in the kitchen pipework, we can help.

Somewhere as small as Whitwell, the kitchens that need a deep clean are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still needs the occasional deep clean and its grease trap kept clear.

We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

How we price grease trap cleaning

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The number of sites or systems
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • The condition of the system

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Any previous report or certificate

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

What happens if it’s left?

Pouring hot water or chemicals down a slow drain is a common quick fix. That only moves the grease further down the pipe, where it sets again. Emptying and cleaning the trap deals with the source. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Grease deep in the drains, which needs jetting by a drainage contractor
  • Blockages in the public sewer beyond the property
  • A grease trap that is too small for the kitchen

If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

What the work covers

  • Inline grease traps
  • Pot wash sinks
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Kitchen waste pipes
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Restaurants and takeaways

How it works

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the grease trap cleaning, clear away and leave you the report. The visit itself takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Whitwell knowing what to expect.

  1. A visit is booked around your service.
  2. The trap is opened up and checked.
  3. We remove the grease layer and settled solids.
  4. We clean the baffles, inlet and outlet.
  5. We close it up, check it drains and suggest when it needs cleaning again.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Advice

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Whitwell questions

Will you come out to Whitwell?

Yes, Whitwell is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Which council inspects kitchens in Whitwell?

Kitchens in Whitwell are inspected by Isle of Wight council’s environmental health officers. Keep the dates of your last deep clean and grease trap visit with your food safety records, ready if an officer asks.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What should go in our maintenance log?

The reports and certificates from each visit, plus your own logs. They’re what an insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask for, so keep them together and easy to find.

Will I get paperwork for my records?

Yes. It’s the record insurers and inspectors ask to see: a dated report with pictures, listing the work and any areas we couldn’t reach.

Will you tell us when the next visit is due?

Yes. The interval depends on how much the system is used and what we find and the report sets out why.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What we’re called out for in Whitwell

The more a kitchen cooks and washes up, the quicker the trap fills. A trap that suited a quieter kitchen can struggle when cooking increases.

The symptoms we are asked about most are:

  • Washing-up water that will not drain away
  • A routine grease trap service
  • Drains that gurgle and bubble
  • A full, neglected grease trap

A summer deep clean suits schools such as Niton Primary School, as the kitchen can be stripped back with no lunches to serve.

Before booking anyone

  • What insurance they carry
  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Questions to ask before booking

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Report slow or smelly sinks early
  • Let us know if the kitchen gets busier
  • Keep the grease trap on a regular cleaning schedule
  • Keep waste oil out of the drains

You’ll get our view on how often the trap needs cleaning. That depends on how quickly it filled and how busy the kitchen is.

More cooking means more grease in the trap. Booking cleans more often stops it overflowing.
