Grease filter exchange in Westdean
The filters in the canopy are the first thing cooking vapour meets. They catch grease before it reaches the plenum and ductwork and they do it best when they’re clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. The work covers wall canopies, mesh filters and island canopies, and the jobs we see most are filters that leave gaps in the canopy and a greasy plenum behind the filters.
Somewhere as small as Westdean, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
- Keep filter exchange and TR19 cleaning on the same plan
- Report a dripping canopy early
- Keep every filter in place during service
Keep an eye out for filters that have been taken out. Gaps let grease into the plenum so tell us if you need a replacement.
Dripping filters are a clear sign they’re full. A clean set right away cuts the grease in the canopy and the plenum may need a clean as well.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
What happens if it’s left?
Grease dripping from the canopy is a sign the filters can’t hold any more. Left, it ends up on equipment, food areas and staff and that’s the kind of thing inspectors look for. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

How it works
Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Westdean knowing what to expect.
- We count and measure the filters in every canopy.
- A change schedule is agreed to match the kitchen’s cooking hours.
- At every visit, the greasy filters are lifted out.
- Clean filters go straight back in, seated properly with no gaps.
- If a filter is damaged or the plenum needs attention, we tell you.
How to prepare
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Westdean questions
Who inspects food businesses in Westdean?
Kitchens in Westdean are inspected by Wealden council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Which fire authority looks after Westdean?
That is East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Do you deal with bent or broken filters?
Filters that no longer fit properly need replacing. We’ll tell you which ones and why on the visit.
Can you clean our existing filters instead?
We offer filter cleaning as well as exchange. We’ll explain the options when we quote.
Where does the waste go?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.
Are you accredited?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
Common problems we fix in Westdean
Wherever you are, Westdean included, filter washing is the job that gets skipped when the kitchen is busy. It only takes a couple of missed weeks for a filter bank to clog.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- Gaps where filters have been removed
- Filters that come out of the sink still dirty
- A greasy plenum behind the filters
- Grease filters clogged with grease
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Westdean (Alfriston Clergy House is about 2 miles north), fitting access panels needs care.
Questions to ask before booking
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- What hours they’ll be on site
How we price grease filter exchange
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Travel, parking and unloading
- A single visit or a regular plan
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- The size of the system
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
Helping us quote
We can often survey from pictures. The most useful are:
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The postcode and the type of business
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
What grease filter exchange looks like in Westdean
Westdean lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Westdean. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Kitchens in Westdean get their food hygiene inspections from Wealden council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
Where a hall near The Parish Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Westdean, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Westdean is Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital, about 3.9 miles west.

Multi-site and managed buildings
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
