Grease filter exchange for sites in West End

How we handle grease filter exchange in West End

The filters in the canopy are the first thing cooking vapour meets. Their job is to stop grease getting further into the system, but only while they’re reasonably clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. Typical jobs include damaged filters letting grease past and gaps where filters have been removed, on restaurants and pubs, island canopies and wall canopies.

In a small place like West End, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

What we do, step by step

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and photos. The middle part takes longest, and that takes well under an hour for most canopies. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to West End.

  1. The filters in each canopy are measured and counted.
  2. We set the interval with you.
  3. The dirty set is lifted out.
  4. Clean filters go in and we check they sit snugly.
  5. We take the greasy set away and confirm the next date.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Mesh filters

Mesh filters are still found in many canopies. We exchange them on the same basis as baffles.

School, care home and staff kitchens

Visits can be planned around holidays and quieter periods, keeping the filters ready for the busy weeks.

Do you need grease filter exchange in West End?

Repeated removal and washing takes its toll on filters. Damaged filters do not sit flush, leaving gaps for grease to slip through.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Filter washing that keeps being missed
  • Hand-washed filters that still look greasy
  • Grease dripping from the canopy
  • Weak extraction at the canopy

Hatfield House, about 1.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses near West End; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Kitchen extracts in West End

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 pubs, bars and clubs across West End and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Food hygiene inspections in West End are the job of Welwyn Hatfield council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Fire safety in West End falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Essendon CofE (VC) Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in West End, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What affects the quote in West End

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we’ll talk you through it.

Helping us quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is

For grease filter exchange in West End, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.

Leave it or put it right?

Leaving filters too long pushes more grease into the plenum and ducts. The ductwork then loads up faster, and grease may build up faster than the cleaning interval allows. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to West End is calmer for everyone.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

West End questions

Who inspects food businesses in West End?

The local authority for West End is Welwyn Hatfield council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Is West End within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

What happens to the waste?

We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

Is there a cleaning option for the filters we have?

We offer filter cleaning as well as exchange. We will explain the options when we quote.

Can we skip TR19 cleans if the filters are changed regularly?

No, the two work together. TR19® cleaning covers the canopy, plenum, ductwork and fan, with a certificate and photo report.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What should go in our maintenance log?

Anything that proves the system is maintained: our reports and photos, any certificates and your in-house logs. A single log for each site works best.

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Aftercare tips

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Book full TR19 cleans alongside filter changes
  • Look out for drips from the canopy
  • Keep canopy surfaces wiped down
  • Always run the extract while cooking

If the plenum behind the filters looks greasy, we say so. That might mean bringing a TR19® clean forward, and we can arrange it.

If filters are already dripping, they’re overdue. A clean set straight away cuts the grease in the canopy and the plenum may need a clean as well.
