Grease filter exchange in Viables

A filter service works alongside TR19® cleaning, not instead of it. Fresh filters help limit what gets into the ductwork, but some grease still passes through as vapour. That is why the whole system still needs cleaning to TR19 at the right interval. The work covers mesh filters, island canopies and restaurants and pubs, and people most often call us about filters left unwashed on busy weeks and grease dripping from the canopy.

Around a smaller place like Viables, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Multi-site and managed buildings

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

What affects the cost of grease filter exchange

We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • The condition of the system
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Where the site is and how we reach it

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What we need to know

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Viables kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records include about 23 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 5 hotels and guest houses across Viables and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Viables is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. In Viables, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Basingstoke and Deane council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital is the nearest hospital to Viables, about 2.3 miles north-west. School kitchens, at schools like St John's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Historic houses near Viables, such as The Vyne about 3.9 miles north, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Viables is about 1 mile south-east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Whatever kind of site you run in Viables, we can take on grease filter exchange. We can work out of hours so the site keeps running. We cover 683 places across Hampshire, large and small. For sites nearby, see our Reading page (15 miles or so).

Work in RG21, RG22 and RG25 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Streets in the area include Grove Road, Porter Road and Morley Road, and we cover them all for grease filter exchange. If your site is just outside Viables, we cover Cliddesden (1 mile south), Eastrop (1 mile north), Oakridge (1 mile north), Lychpit (2 miles north-east) and Old Basing (2 miles north-east). Further out, we also cover Farnborough (14 miles east), Fleet (11 miles east), Aldershot (14 miles east), Alton (8 miles south-east), Yateley (13 miles north-east) and Tadley (8 miles north).

The countryside around Viables includes The Mill Field and Farleigh Hill.

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • An extract that was undersized from the start
  • Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean
  • A canopy that needs a proper clean

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Mesh filters
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies
  • School and hospital kitchens

How it works

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the grease filter exchange, clear away and leave you the report. The visit itself takes a short visit, depending on how many filters the canopies hold. For a site near Viables, the work is booked around your opening hours, evenings and weekends included.

  1. We record the number, size and type of your filters.
  2. An exchange schedule is agreed to suit your cooking.
  3. On each visit, we remove the greasy filters.
  4. Clean filters go in and we check they sit snugly.
  5. The dirty filters leave with us and the next visit is booked.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Why it’s worth doing now in Viables

Filters full of grease are fuel sitting right above the cooking. Flames from the range can be drawn up into the canopy and grease in the duct can carry a fire further. Clean filters mean less fuel in the canopy. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

Why us?

  • Every job surveyed first
  • Evenings, overnight and weekends, plus 24/7 emergency callout
  • In business since 2009
  • We are fully insured

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
  • Watch for grease drips between visits
  • Keep every filter in place during service
  • Book full TR19 cleans alongside filter changes

We tell you if we spot anything in the canopy that needs attention. That might mean bringing a TR19® clean forward, and we can arrange it.

Damaged filters leave gaps in the defence. Replacing them early protects the plenum and ductwork.

Part by part

Mesh filters

Mesh traps grease between its layers, which makes hand-washing hard work.

School, care home and staff kitchens

Even kitchens with fixed meal times build up grease, though often more slowly.

Viables questions

Can a school canteen extract in Viables be done out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 20 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Viables. You can ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the dates the site is empty.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Viables?

Viables is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

What if some of our filters are damaged?

We check every filter at each visit. Any that are bent or damaged are flagged since a poor fit lets grease past.

How do you protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Do I get a report after the visit?

Yes. It’s the record insurers and inspectors ask to see: a dated report with pictures, listing the work and any areas we couldn’t reach.

Does a filter exchange disrupt service?

A change takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters, so disruption is small. We’ll fit it around your service wherever we can.

How often should grease filters be changed?

It varies from kitchen to kitchen. We look at your cooking and set an interval to match, and adjust it if needed.

What does grease filter exchange cost?

Pricing depends on the kitchen, so we need to know the filters and interval first. You get a fixed price before the service starts.
