Grease filter exchange in North End, Essex
Grease filter exchange for businesses, landlords and public buildings in North End. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and fully insured.
- Damaged filters letting grease past
- Weak extraction at the canopy
- Grease collecting in the filter channels
What a clean will not put right
Grease filter exchange can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:
- A heavily greased plenum or canopy, which needs cleaning to TR19
- Grease deep in the extract system
- Odours from the discharge that filters will not stop
If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

Grease filter exchange for kitchens and businesses in North End
The filters in the canopy are the first thing cooking vapour meets. They catch grease before it reaches the plenum and ductwork and they do it best when they’re clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. We’re often asked to deal with hand-washed filters that still look greasy and grease filters clogged with grease, on wall canopies, school and hospital kitchens and restaurants and pubs.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What else we do in North End
Kitchen extracts in North End
Food hygiene inspections in North End are the job of Chelmsford council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. North End, about 32 miles from central London, is within our usual area. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you.
School kitchens, at schools like The Flitch Green Academy for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Andrew, or anywhere in North End, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
North End is about 7 miles south-west of Braintree, in Essex. Sites in North End get the same service as everywhere we cover: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. We cover 644 places across Essex, large and small. For sites nearby, see our Chelmsford page (8 miles or so).
Work in CM6 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. Grease filter exchange is available to premises on Bennett's Lane, Mill Road and Black Chapel Lane and nearby roads. Close by, we work in Causeway End (1 mile north-east), Little Dunmow (1 mile north), Ford End (1 mile south-east), Felsted (1 mile north-east) and Brookstreet (1 mile north). Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (8 miles south-east), Braintree (7 miles north-east), Harlow (14 miles west), Maldon (14 miles south-east), Billericay (15 miles south) and Witham (10 miles east).
Near you in North End
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to The Butchers Arms Public House and the streets around them. Nearby you’ll also find Little Easton Moat (4.7 miles north-west) and Broomfield Hospital (5.2 miles south-east). The countryside around North End includes Phyllis Currie Nature Reserve.
What we are called out for in North End
However long the kitchen cooks each day, the filters see every minute of it. A kitchen that cooks all day loads its filters quickly, so it needs more frequent changes.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Filters so greasy the air can barely pass
- Filters left unwashed on busy weeks
- Smoke and heat lingering under the hood
- A canopy running with filters missing
A hospital like Broomfield Hospital, about 5.2 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether they’re fully insured
- What records you will receive afterwards
- When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
For landlords and multi-site operators
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
North End: your questions answered
Who is the fire and rescue service for North End?
Fire safety enforcement in North End is handled by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Which council inspects kitchens in North End?
Food hygiene inspections in North End are carried out by Chelmsford council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Can damaged filters stay in the canopy?
Damaged filters don’t seat properly and let grease through. We flag any we find and explain what’s needed.
Will we have to stop cooking for a filter change?
Not for long, and we can time it to avoid service. The canopy shouldn’t be used without filters so the swap is done promptly.
What happens to the dirty filters?
Yes. The dirty filters are taken away for cleaning and the clean set stays in the canopy.
What’s the right interval for changing filters?
It depends on how much and what the kitchen cooks. Kitchens that fry and grill all day need changes more often than kitchens that cook less. We agree the interval with you.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
How long does the visit take?
That depends on the amount of work, but for many sites it takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.
What affects the cost of grease filter exchange
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- The condition of the system
- The times the site is available
- How big the system is
Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.
Helping us quote
You do not need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The postcode and the type of business
To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, photos of the system and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Aftercare tips
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Clear anything stored on or near the canopy
- Keep the extract on whenever the range is in use
- Tell us if the menu or opening hours change
- Do not refit a filter that is bent
If the plenum behind the filters looks greasy, we say so. It can be a sign that a full TR19® clean is due and we can book that in.
Saturated filters let more grease through. Getting onto a regular exchange now keeps grease out of the plenum and ductwork between full cleans.
What we do, step by step
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes a few minutes per canopy, longer for a large kitchen with several canopies. Somewhere as small as North End, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
- Together we set how often the filters should be changed.
- On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
- We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
- Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Get a fixed quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Related advice
Different parts, different methods
The plenum
Clean filters reduce the grease reaching the plenum, but it’s still cleaned during a full TR19 clean.
Mesh filters
Grease lodges deep in the layers of a mesh filter, so a quick rinse rarely gets it clean.
