Grease filter exchange across New England

What grease filter exchange looks like in New England

New England sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. New England, about 46 miles from central London, is within our usual area. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours.

For kitchens in and around New England, the clean covers everything from the canopy to the discharge. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Leonard or anywhere around New England, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

New England is in Essex. Whatever kind of site you run in New England, grease filter exchange is something we can help with. We can work out of hours so trading is not interrupted. New England is one of 644 towns, villages and districts in Essex where we work for grease filter exchange. Chelmsford is in our area too, about 22 miles from New England.

Here we cover the CO9 postcode area for grease filter exchange. If your site is just outside New England, we cover Birdbrook (1 mile south). About our grease filter exchange in New England

Grease filters are the first line of defence in a kitchen extract. They catch grease before it reaches the plenum and ductwork and they do it best when they’re clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. The work covers restaurants and pubs, baffle filters and island canopies, and the jobs we see most are a canopy that drips grease and weak extraction at the canopy.

For a kitchen in or near New England, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

For landlords and multi-site operators

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

The process

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to New England and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We record the number, size and type of your filters.
  2. We set the interval with you.
  3. The dirty set is lifted out.
  4. Clean filters go in and we check they sit snugly.
  5. The dirty filters leave with us and the next visit is booked.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Send a few details and photos, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

What the work involves, part by part

The plenum

The plenum is the space behind the filters. It collects whatever grease the filters miss.

Canopy filter housings

Filters sit in a housing or channel in the canopy. A damaged housing leaves gaps.

Aftercare tips

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Look out for drips from the canopy
  • Keep filter exchange and TR19 cleaning on the same plan
  • Never cook with the extract switched off
  • Clean the canopy surfaces regularly

Once the clean filters are in, the kitchen can cook right away. We take the greasy filters with us to be cleaned.

Saturated filters let more grease through. A regular cycle keeps the rest of the system cleaner between full cleans.

Fixed quotes for grease filter exchange in New England

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The condition of the system
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Any permits to work or inductions

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you will get one fixed quote.

Helping us quote

We can often survey from photos. Try to include:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Any previous report or certificate

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before we start.

Why act early in New England

Filters full of grease are fuel sitting right above the cooking. Flames from the range can be drawn up into the canopy and grease in the duct can carry a fire further. Clean filters mean less fuel in the canopy. In a small place like New England, a system that fails can take a site out of use.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Why us?

  • Fixed quotes from a survey or photos
  • Full insurance on every job
  • Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001
  • Out-of-hours work and a 24/7 emergency line

Common questions in New England

Do you work at weekends in New England?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Which environmental health team covers New England?

Food hygiene inspections in New England are carried out by Braintree council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

What types of filter do you exchange?

We work with both baffle and mesh filters. The first step is recording what you have and plan the exchange around them.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. In shared or managed buildings, a landlord, facilities manager or managing agent can share the duty.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Usually not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.

Which records should we keep?

Every certificate and report from each visit, kept together in your maintenance log with your in-house cleaning records. BESA advises that certificates record the date, location and technician.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.

What a clean won’t put right

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Extraction problems caused by the fan rather than the filters
  • Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean
  • A canopy that needs a proper clean

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.
