How we handle grease filter exchange in Hill Head

Think of filter exchange as routine care for the extract. It keeps airflow up and grease down between full cleans and takes a messy task off your team. The full TR19 clean then gives the system its clean bill of health. Common call-outs are for filter washing that keeps being missed and drips falling from the filters onto equipment, across island canopies, restaurants and pubs and mesh filters.

For a kitchen in or near Hill Head, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

Aftercare tips

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Book full TR19 cleans alongside filter changes
  • Don’t refit a filter that is bent
  • Never cook with the extract switched off
  • Let us know if your cooking hours increase

Nothing changes for your staff, except one less greasy job. Just keep the canopy clear for the next visit and tell us if service times change.

A kitchen that’s getting busier needs its filters changed more often. Adjusting the schedule now prevents a build-up behind the canopy.

Common questions in Hill Head

Is grease filter exchange any different in a coastal place like Hill Head?

It can. Salt air reaches Hill Head, which is within about 1 mile of the coast, and it speeds up rust. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Hill Head in the summer holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 7 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Hill Head, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the dates the site is empty.

How often should grease filters be changed?

That depends on the cooking. Heavy cooking means more frequent changes than lighter ones. We agree the interval with you.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always survey first, from your pictures and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

What do you do to protect the area?

By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

What happens to the dirty filters?

We take them away. That is the point of an exchange: clean filters in, dirty ones out and nothing greasy left on site.

Do you recommend a next date?

Yes. The report recommends when the next visit should be, based on what we found and how the system is used.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Grease behind the filters that a swap cannot remove
  • An extract that was undersized from the start
  • A noisy or failed extract fan

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Why it’s worth doing now in Hill Head

Leaving filters too long pushes more grease into the plenum and ducts. That makes the next full clean a bigger job, and grease may build up faster than the cleaning interval allows. In a small place like Hill Head, a system that fails can take a site out of use.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for straight advice and a fixed quote.

The process

We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Hill Head.

  1. We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
  2. A change schedule is agreed to match the kitchen’s cooking hours.
  3. On each visit, the dirty filters come out of the canopy.
  4. Clean, dry filters are fitted in their place, with no gaps left between them.
  5. If a filter is damaged or the plenum needs attention, we tell you.

How to prepare

  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Hill Head kitchens: local notes

At about 1 mile from the coast, Hill Head is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The Food Standards Agency lists about 7 pubs and bars as registered food businesses across Hill Head and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Food hygiene inspections in Hill Head are the job of Fareham council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Holy Rood Church or elsewhere in Hill Head, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Hill Head is Gosport War Memorial Hospital, about 4 miles south-east.

When to call us in Hill Head

Repeated removal and washing takes its toll on filters. Damaged filters don’t sit flush, leaving gaps for grease to slip through.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Blocked baffle filters
  • A canopy that drips grease
  • Filters left unwashed on busy weeks
  • Hand-washed filters that still look greasy

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Crofton Hammond Infant School or anywhere near Hill Head, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

The plenum

The plenum is the space behind the filters. It collects whatever grease the filters miss.

Busy restaurant and pub kitchens

Kitchens that fry and grill all day load their filters fast. Their exchange schedule is usually the tightest.
