Grease filter exchange in Cowes
Grease filters are the first line of defence in a kitchen extract. They catch grease before it reaches the plenum and ductwork and they do it best when they’re clean. Our grease filter exchange service swaps dirty filters for clean ones on a schedule. Typical jobs include a greasy plenum behind the filters and gaps where filters have been removed, on school and hospital kitchens, mesh filters and wall canopies.
In a town like Cowes, most of the kitchen extracts we’re asked about belong to restaurants, cafés, pubs, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Each has a canopy, filters, ductwork and a fan to keep clear of grease.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Part by part
The plenum
The plenum is the space behind the filters. Grease that gets past the filters settles there.
Baffle filters
Baffle filters are a common choice for commercial canopies. They do not clean themselves as the collected grease builds up between the blades.
Why deal with it now?
Leaving filters too long pushes more grease into the plenum and ducts. The ductwork then loads up faster and grease readings can rise between cleans. The sooner the work is done, the simpler the job for a site in Cowes.
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.

What affects the quote in Cowes
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- The scale of the work
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- The condition of the system
No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.
Asking for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- A few general shots of the system
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
For grease filter exchange in Cowes, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send pictures or your last report if you can. A fixed quote normally follows within one working day.
Between visits
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
- Clear anything stored on or near the canopy
- Don’t let the full clean slip because filters are changed
- Always run the extract while cooking
The canopy looks cleaner and the air moves better right away. Keep the extract running while you cook so the filters do their job.
If cooking has stepped up, the filter schedule should too. Adjusting the schedule now prevents a build-up behind the canopy.
When to call us in Cowes
Cooking vapour carries grease into the canopy. The filters catch much of it, and day by day they load up and airflow falls away.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Hand-washed filters that still look greasy
- Bent or damaged filters that do not sit properly
- Grease dripping from the canopy
- Poor airflow through the filters
School kitchens, at schools like Cowes Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
Questions to ask before booking
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- What hours they’ll be on site
- Whether a written report and pictures are included
Questions from Cowes
Do you work overnight in Cowes?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Cowes keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Cowes out of term?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. There are about 7 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Cowes. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we will fit the work in.
Which grease filters does the service cover?
Baffle and mesh filters are both covered. The first step is recording what you have and plan the exchange around them.
What paperwork should we keep on file?
Anything that proves the system is maintained: reports, certificates, photos and your own cleaning or check logs. A single log for each site works best.
Who is the responsible person?
The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
What does grease filter exchange cost?
Every kitchen is different, so we need to know the filters and interval first. We send you a fixed quote before the service starts.
What a clean will not put right
Not every problem is solved by grease filter exchange, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It won’t put right:
- A canopy that needs a proper clean
- Grease deep in the extract system
- Smell complaints that need odour control equipment
If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.
What the work covers
- Mesh filters
- Restaurants and pubs
- Island canopies
- Baffle filters
- Wall canopies
- School and hospital kitchens
The process
Every visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a short visit, depending on how many filters the canopies hold. Before the visit, a few photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan the work in Cowes.
- We record the number, size and type of your filters.
- We set the interval with you.
- On each visit, we remove the greasy filters.
- A clean set is fitted and checked for gaps.
- The dirty filters leave with us and the next visit is booked.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Move anything stored near the system
Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
