West Sussex · Fire damper testing
Fire damper testing in Whitehall, West Sussex
Fire damper testing across Whitehall and nearby, timed so the site keeps working and finished with a written report and photos.
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
What we are called out for in Whitehall
Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. Without an access panel nearby, they’re easy to forget, and anything nobody can get to goes untested.
Look out for any of the following:
- Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
- Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms
- Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel
For schools like Shipley CofE Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Whether the price is fixed
- If they look at the system before pricing
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
Fire damper testing in Whitehall, done properly
Testing finds the dampers that will not close. When one sticks, has a damaged link or is corroded, we report it and offer remedials, so the fault doesn’t just sit on a list. The work covers wall and floor dampers, offices and schools and motorised smoke dampers, and common reasons people get in touch are smoke dampers that need testing through their controls and gaps in the fire damper test log.
Testing in a small place like Whitehall is planned around the journey and access, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

What else we do in Whitehall
Whitehall: your questions answered
Which fire service covers Whitehall?
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Whitehall. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Can you work in Whitehall outside opening hours?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Whitehall does not have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
What does fire damper testing cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. We fix the price before work begins.
Do you carry out smoke damper testing?
Yes. We operate each smoke damper from its controls and check it opens and closes fully. Where a controls contractor needs to be involved, we arrange it with you.
How often should fire dampers be tested?
The guidance from BESA is at least annually, by a competent person. A test on completion of installation comes first.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.
Can you price the work without visiting?
Often, yes. With good photos, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
How long will damper testing take?
Typically the work takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. The number of dampers and how they’re reached decide the rest.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Whitehall
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Book the next test before the year runs out
- Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
- Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
- Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
Make sure trades working in ceilings and risers know where the dampers sit, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. Anything they disturb should be checked again.
Good access is half the battle. If a damper has no access panel, have one fitted ahead of the next visit.
Fire damper testing in Whitehall: local notes
Whitehall sits within the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up. Different parts, different methods
Ceiling voids and risers
Plant rooms and risers can be damp, which leads to corrosion. We note any rust or water damage on the report so it can be dealt with.
Smoke dampers
If a smoke damper will not operate when signalled, it goes on the report as a failure, along with what we saw.
When something else is needed
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
- Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will say what we think.
Where we work
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Riser dampers
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
How the visit works
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Whitehall, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- We gather what’s known about the dampers, from drawings, registers or past reports.
- We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
- We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
