How we price fire damper testing

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The size of the system

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Fire damper testing in West Street

The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: the blade is released, checked for a full close and reset. We test dampers for sites in West Street and the rest of Kent, logging each one so the record builds year on year. Common call-outs are for missing or out-of-date damper records and fire damper items raised by an assessor, on riser dampers, motorised smoke dampers and fusible link fire dampers.

Somewhere as small as West Street, fire dampers are typically found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to West Street can be planned properly.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

How to prepare

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

Ask for a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.

Your questions about fire damper testing in West Street

Can you get to a site in West Street?

Yes. West Street is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Can you test school fire dampers in West Street out of term?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 4 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of West Street. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Can you test motorised smoke dampers?

Yes. Smoke dampers are motorised, so we test them by operating them through their controls. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools
  • Motorised smoke dampers

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
  • Diary the annual test well ahead

When we finish, we send a report covering every damper on the visit, with where it is and whether it passed. File it with your fire safety log so it’s to hand for assessors and insurers.

Good access is half the battle. Where there’s no hatch, an access panel makes testing possible ahead of the next visit.

Access panels

Where there’s no access panel, we record the damper as not tested and say why. We can fit access panels so it’s tested next time.

Smoke dampers

Because they’re linked to controls, smoke damper tests can need some coordination. We agree the arrangements with you in advance.
