Fire damper testing across West Marden

What happens if it’s left?

An untested damper is an unknown. Testing turns it into a known pass or a known fault, with remedials offered for anything that fails, and that’s something you can plan around. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins.

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in West Marden

In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked for the dampers in your building. Common call-outs are for dirty dampers that may not close and fire dampers with no recent test record, across hospitals and care homes, fusible link fire dampers and riser dampers.

In a village or hamlet like West Marden, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.

Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
  • Book the next test before the year runs out
  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers

Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, along with an offer to repair or replace them. Once the work is done, the damper is tested again and the record updated.

Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.

What a clean will not put right

Not every problem is solved by fire damper testing, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
  • Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

What happens on the day

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to West Marden and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
  2. We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Multi-site and managed buildings

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

Questions from West Marden

Do you work overnight in West Marden?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The site is handed back ready to open. When you phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.

Is West Marden within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

How much notice do you need?

Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.

What if a fire damper will not close?

The fault is recorded and explained in the report. We can then repair or replace the damper as a remedial job with a fresh test at the end.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Where does the waste go?

We take it away at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

How we price fire damper testing

There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • The condition of the system
  • The size of the system

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before we start.

What to send for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

How the job changes from site to site

Smoke dampers

Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. We test them through their controls and check each blade travels fully.

Fusible link fire dampers

Spring-operated fire dampers need testing at least once a year. Dropping the blade reveals springs that are tired and blades that drag.
