Need fire damper testing in The Sands?

How we price fire damper testing

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • What state the system is in
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • The number of sites or systems
  • The size of the system

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • Any previous report or certificate

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, call 0345 646 2711 or email us.

Fire damper testing in The Sands, done properly

Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. Drop testing proves that this still happens, and every result is written down, damper by damper. The work covers offices and schools, riser dampers and fusible link fire dampers, and people most often call us about dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and smoke dampers that need testing through their controls.

In a village or hamlet like The Sands, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to The Sands and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

For landlords and multi-site operators

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with pictures.

When to call us in The Sands

Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. Without an access panel nearby, they’re easy to forget, and anything nobody can get to goes untested.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Damper actions from a fire risk assessment
  • Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel

A school like South Farnham School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.

Comparing quotes

  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Whether the price is fixed
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

What the work involves, part by part

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Buildings where people sleep or need help to leave rely heavily on compartments holding fire back. Annual damper testing is part of keeping that in place.

Access panels

Over time, hatches and panels get covered up. Clear access makes the test quicker and less disruptive.

What staff can safely do

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Questions from The Sands

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in The Sands?

The Sands is in the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.

Will you come out to The Sands?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

How often do fire dampers need drop testing?

BESA guidance is that fire dampers are tested on completion of installation and at least annually after that. For spring-operated dampers, once a year is the minimum.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

How do you deal with dampers that can’t be reached?

We record it as not tested and explain why. We can fit an access panel so it’s tested on the next visit.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Yes, for many jobs. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and we typically come back within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we’ll say so.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Get remedials done soon after a failed test
  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
  • Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers

Pass the report to whoever keeps your fire risk assessment up to date so their assessment matches what was found. Outstanding faults should be dealt with, not left on file.

Keep a damper register: where each damper is, what kind it is and when it was last tested. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.

Fire dampers in The Sands buildings

The Sands, about 34 miles from central London, is within our usual area. Visits are booked around your hours, evenings and weekends included. The Sands’s nearest hospital, Milford Hospital, is about 5.7 miles south-east. A hospital is the kind of building where dampers sit on every floor, and clinics, surgeries and care homes need the same annual testing for any they have.

If you manage a historic building in the area (Farnham Castle is about 2.8 miles west), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording. Milford Hospital, about 5.7 miles south-east of The Sands, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.

The Sands is about 2 miles east of Farnham, in Surrey.
