Fire and smoke damper testing in Stansted
Specialist fire damper testing for Stansted: diagnosis first, then a fixed quote, the work and a report with pictures. Call for a fixed quote.
- Buildings with no damper register
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
Why it’s worth doing now in Stansted
Faults found early are often simpler to put right. Left for years, corrosion and build-up can turn it into a full damper replacement. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.
Why us?

- One number for every site across the South East and London

Fire damper testing in Stansted, done properly
We’re often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Stansted. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we’ll plan the testing around when the building is in use. The work covers wall and floor dampers, fusible link fire dampers and riser dampers, and people most often call us about fire dampers nobody can get to and smoke dampers with no recent test.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

For landlords and multi-site operators
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
What staff can safely do
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Different parts, different methods
Ceiling voids and risers
Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. Ceiling tiles are lifted for access and replaced afterwards.
Fusible link fire dampers
The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.
What happens on the day
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Somewhere as small as Stansted, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
How to prepare
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Stansted: your questions answered
Do you do school damper testing in Stansted in the summer holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Stansted, the Food Standards Agency lists about 2 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Do you work overnight in Stansted?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Stansted keeps running as normal. When you call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.
Will we get a certificate for the dampers?
Our paperwork is a test report, not a certificate of compliance. It lists each damper, the result and any remedials needed.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
What information do you need?
Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Are you accredited?
We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
What fire damper testing cannot fix
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what fire damper testing won’t do:
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
- Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly.

Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
- Do not let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Outstanding faults should be dealt with, not left on file.
Good access is half the battle. If a damper has no access panel, have one fitted before the next test.
