FAQs for Ripley
Do you cover smaller places like Ripley?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Ripley is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Ripley?
Ripley is in the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.
Do you certify fire dampers?
You get a test report recording every damper we tested, with its location, its result and any faults. It belongs in your fire safety log.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not normally. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few photos and any previous report.
Do you carry out smoke damper testing?
Yes. Smoke dampers are motorised, so we test them by operating them through their controls. We check every blade moves fully and record the outcome.
What accreditations do you have?
CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Ripley
The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. Where a blade sticks, a link is damaged or corrosion has set in, we note it and can quote to repair or replace the damper rather than leaving you with a problem and no fix. We are often asked to deal with fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and missing or out-of-date damper records, on hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and offices and schools.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. A first test usually starts with finding them all.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Ripley
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
- Do not let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
Any damper that failed is listed with the reason, along with an offer to repair or replace them. Once the work is done, the damper is tested again and the record updated.
Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that is just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.
What fire damper testing can’t fix
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted

What affects the cost of fire damper testing
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:
- What state the system is in
- How big the system is
- Parking and loading at the site
- How many systems or sites are involved
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
Need a price for fire damper testing? Please ring 0345 646 2711 or email us with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before anything is booked.
How it works
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Ripley.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
Ask for a quote
To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Advice
Different parts, different methods
Offices and retail
Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.
Access panels
Testing depends on getting to the damper. Most need an access panel in the duct and a hatch in the ceiling or wall.

What we are called out for in Ripley
Corrosion is another common cause of failure. Water leaks, condensation and damp plant areas attack the casing, blade and spring, so a damper can seize without anyone noticing.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Fire dampers nobody can get to
- Buildings with no damper register
- Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
- Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
School buildings such as Ripley Court School are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.
