Food Standards Agency records list about 3 schools, colleges and universities and about 3 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises registered as food businesses in North Leigh and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. For schools like North Leigh Church of England (Controlled) School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear. If you manage an older building converted to a hotel or venue, like many historic houses in the area (Blenheim Palace is about 3.9 miles north-east), finding every damper is the first job.

Fire damper testing in North Leigh
Smoke dampers work differently from fire dampers. A smoke damper is driven by a motor and responds to signals from its controls, so we test them by operating them through those controls and confirming every blade travels fully and comes back. Common call-outs are for damper actions from a fire risk assessment and dust or grease build-up on damper blades, on riser dampers, offices and schools and wall and floor dampers.
For a building in or near North Leigh, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Between visits
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
- Book the next test before the year runs out
Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
How the job changes from site to site
Offices and retail
Each new fit-out brings a risk of damaged or covered dampers. Testing after a fit-out shows whether anything was disturbed.
Fusible link fire dampers
The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.
North Leigh: your questions answered
Can a school’s dampers in North Leigh be tested out of term time?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of North Leigh, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for North Leigh?
Fire safety enforcement in North Leigh is handled by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Can you quote from pictures?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Every site has its own report.
Who has the duty to keep fire dampers working?
The responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, who might be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. They must keep fire safety measures, including dampers, in working order.
Which sectors do you work in?
We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, as well as food production and leisure sites.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
Are you insured?
Yes, we are fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
What affects the quote in North Leigh
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- How easy every part is to reach
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- The site address and the type of premises
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
What we do, step by step
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to North Leigh.
- We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Clear loose items from the work area

Honest limits
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly.
What the work covers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Offices and schools
- Riser dampers
Why deal with it now?
Sites in North Leigh tested every year build up a history for each damper so repeat problems show up early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it long before it fails outright. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near North Leigh rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
