Fire damper testing for sites in North Camp

What the work involves, part by part

Offices and retail

In shared buildings, some dampers sit inside tenants’ space. Access to each area is planned with whoever manages the building.

Ceiling voids and risers

Plant rooms and risers can be damp, which leads to corrosion. Signs of corrosion or water are recorded so it can be dealt with.

About our fire damper testing in North Camp

Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. Drop testing proves that this still happens, and we record the result for every damper we test. The work covers fusible link fire dampers, offices and schools and hospitals and care homes, and common reasons people get in touch are fire dampers nobody can get to and damper actions from a fire risk assessment.

A building in a smaller place like North Camp might have only a few dampers, but each one still needs drop testing at least once a year, with a record of every result.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Fire dampers in North Camp buildings

Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 22 schools, colleges and universities, about 20 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises and about 7 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses serving food in North Camp and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. North Camp’s nearest hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, is about 2.7 miles north. Hospitals are a good example of a building with fire dampers across many floors and departments.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Why deal with it now?

An untested damper is an unknown. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, which is far easier to plan for. Systems on quieter sites still build up dirt and wear, just more slowly.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

North Camp: your questions answered

Which fire authority looks after North Camp?

North Camp is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.

Can you come to North Camp after we close?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in North Camp can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

What do you do with what you remove?

It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

How much does fire damper testing cost in North Camp?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the site type, opening hours and a few photos.

Do you carry out smoke damper testing?

Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near North Camp when you book.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
  4. Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
  5. We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Keeping the system healthy

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
  • Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file

Tell other contractors where the dampers are, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. Anything they disturb should be checked again.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that’s just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.

What we’re called out for in North Camp

Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. If there’s no hatch to reach them, they slip off everyone’s list, and anything nobody can get to goes untested.

Most sites get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Blades that jam part-way when released
  • Fire damper items raised by an assessor
  • Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
  • Buildings with no damper register

For managed buildings around North Camp station, damper testing can be booked out of hours so tenants are not disturbed.

Questions to ask before booking

  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
