Fire damper testing in Newdigate

Testing finds the dampers that won’t close. When one sticks, has a damaged link or is corroded, we report it and offer remedials, so the fault doesn’t just sit on a list. If you have missing or out-of-date damper records and dampers affected by leaks or condensation, we can put it right, from hospitals and care homes, riser dampers and wall and floor dampers onwards.

In a village or hamlet like Newdigate, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Wherever there are dampers, each one needs testing at least annually.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • File every damper report where your assessor can find it
  • Keep to at least yearly testing
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted

When we finish, we send a report covering every damper on the visit, with where it is and whether it passed. Keep it with the building’s fire safety records so it’s ready when your assessor or insurer asks.

Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. Duct cleaning and damper testing can be planned side by side.

What we are called out for in Newdigate

Building work often happens right next to dampers. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Blades that jam part-way when released
  • Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
  • Fire dampers nobody can get to
  • Dampers affected by leaks or condensation

Langley Green Hospital, about 4.9 miles south-east of Newdigate, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

How it works

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Newdigate.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Advice

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

Where there’s no access panel, we record the damper as not tested and say why. We can fit access panels so it’s tested next time.

Fusible link fire dampers

Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.

When something else is needed

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Deciding where dampers should be fitted
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Offices and schools
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers

Leave it or put it right?

Testing every year builds a history for each damper so repeat problems show up early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it before it becomes a failure. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Newdigate is calmer for everyone.

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Newdigate

Can you work in Newdigate outside opening hours?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Which fire service covers Newdigate?

It’s Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Newdigate. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.

What if a fire damper won’t close?

It’s listed on the report as a fault and we quote for remedials. Once fixed, the damper is drop tested again and the record updated.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

The responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, who might be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. They must keep fire safety measures, including dampers, in working order.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.

What if a damper has no access panel?

Any damper we can’t reach is listed on the report so nothing is quietly missed. An access panel tends to solve it, and we can quote to fit one.

Can you test motorised smoke dampers?

Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. We check every blade moves fully and record the outcome.
