About our fire damper testing in Mud Row
Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and every result is written down, damper by damper. The work covers fusible link fire dampers, wall and floor dampers and hospitals and care homes, and common reasons people get in touch are fire dampers nobody can get to and corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
We have been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- File every damper report where your assessor can find it
- Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
The next test should be no more than a year away. The guidance is at least once a year, and booking the same month each year keeps it simple.
A simple register of every damper helps a great deal: location, type, last test date and result. It means nothing gets forgotten when staff or contractors change.
Fire damper testing in Mud Row: local notes
The coast is only about 1 mile from Mud Row. Near the sea, we look closely for rust on dampers serving intakes and louvres. At about 43 miles from central London, Mud Row sits well inside the area we cover. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you. The fire and rescue service for Mud Row is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.
School buildings such as Eastchurch Church of England Primary School are typically tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.

Why deal with it now?
A damper that’s stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. It’s far better to find that out on a test than in a fire. Somewhere as small as Mud Row, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

The process
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Mud Row knowing what to expect.
- We gather what’s known about the dampers, from drawings, registers or past reports.
- Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
- The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
How to get a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.

- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

FAQs for Mud Row
Do you cover smaller places like Mud Row?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Can the work in Mud Row be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. Your customers, staff or residents in Mud Row needn’t be disturbed. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
Who is responsible for fire damper testing?
The duty falls on the responsible person for the premises. That’s often the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. We carry out the testing and give them the records.
Where does the waste go?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.
How much notice should we give?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
What we’re called out for in Mud Row
Corrosion is another common cause of failure. Condensation, leaks and damp plant rooms corrode the parts that need to move, so a damper can seize without anyone noticing.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
In Mud Row, each damper is dropped to prove it closes fully, then reset.
Questions to ask before you book
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether a survey comes first

For landlords and multi-site operators
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Mud Row
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- The condition of the system
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
What to send for a quote
You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- A few general shots of the system
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Your last certificate, test record or report
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
