Fire damper testing in Jury's Gap, East Sussex
We cover Jury's Gap for fire damper testing. Fixed quotes, work around your opening hours and photo reports as standard.

Different parts, different methods
Fusible link fire dampers
A damaged or painted link can stop a damper doing its job. Each link is looked at as part of the test and any problems go on the report.
Smoke dampers
A smoke damper that does not respond to its controls is recorded as a fault, along with what we saw.
About our fire damper testing in Jury's Gap
Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Annual drop testing is how you know for the dampers in your building. The work covers motorised smoke dampers, offices and schools and fusible link fire dampers, and common reasons people get in touch are fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and motorised smoke dampers due for testing.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
A written report with photos follows every visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Fire dampers in Jury's Gap buildings
At about 1 mile from the coast, Jury's Gap is close enough for sea air to matter. A damper that has corroded can stay open when it should close, which is why coastal sites are worth testing carefully. Fire safety in Jury's Gap falls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises. About 56 miles out from central London, Jury's Gap is part of the South East area we work across. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours.
For buildings in and around Jury's Gap, every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded.

Leave it or put it right?
When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. Damper test records are part of that answer, and they only exist if the testing happened. In a small place like Jury's Gap, a system that fails can take a site out of use.
The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.
Why Jury's Gap businesses choose us
- Member of BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
- Each visit written up, with photos
- We’re fully insured
- One number for every site across the South East and London
For landlords and multi-site operators
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across East Sussex. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

Jury's Gap: your questions answered
Can you get to a site in Jury's Gap?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Jury's Gap is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Can you come to Jury's Gap after we close?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Jury's Gap does not have to lose a day’s trading. When you call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, mention when the site is quiet.
What about areas you cannot get to?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with pictures where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not typically. The area we’re working in has to be out of use while we’re there, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.
What should I send you?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.
How often do fire dampers need drop testing?
According to BESA guidance, dampers should be tested when they’re installed and then at least once a year. For spring-operated dampers, once a year is the minimum.
What happens to the waste?
It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.
The process
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the fire damper testing, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. In a small place like Jury's Gap, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
How to prepare
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Clear the space around the work

Advice
Keeping the system healthy
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
- Report leaks or condensation near ductwork quickly
- Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
- Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Rusted parts are one of the main reasons dampers fail to close.
What staff can safely do
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Signs you need fire damper testing in Jury's Gap
Over the life of a building, owners, tenants and contractors come and go, and damper records often get lost along the way. With no register, it’s hard to say how many dampers exist, let alone when they were tested.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
- Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
- Dampers clogged with dust or grease
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
If you manage a historic building in the area (Lamb House is about 4.4 miles west), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.
