Fire damper testing in Heathrow
Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, there should be a fire damper inside it. Most are held open by a fusible link that melts at a set temperature, letting the blade drop and close the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. Typical jobs include rusted damper blades and springs and fire dampers that fail to drop shut, on motorised smoke dampers, hospitals and care homes and riser dampers.
In a village or hamlet like Heathrow, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Part by part
Fusible link fire dampers
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.
Ceiling voids and risers
Many dampers sit above suspended ceilings. Ceiling tiles are lifted for access and replaced afterwards.
Questions from Heathrow
Which fire authority looks after Heathrow?
That’s Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.
Will you come out to Heathrow?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Heathrow included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.
Which sectors do you work in?
Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
What if a fire damper won’t close?
We note the failure and what we found. A repair or a replacement can follow as a remedial job with a fresh test at the end.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Every site has its own report.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing
Your quote is based on your site. We consider:
- Parking and loading at the site
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- What state the system is in
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.
What to send for a quote
When you call or email, these details help:
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Any previous report or certificate
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will usually have a quote within one working day.
Why it’s worth doing now in Heathrow
Testing every year builds a history for each damper so repeat problems show up early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it before it becomes a failure. In a place like Heathrow, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

What we do, step by step
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the fire damper testing, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. The timing of a visit to Heathrow is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Advice
Between visits
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
- Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
- Report leaks or condensation near ductwork quickly
After testing, you get a report listing each of the fire and smoke dampers we tested, with where it is and whether it passed. File it with your fire safety log so it’s to hand for assessors and insurers.
Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that’s just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.
Do you need fire damper testing in Heathrow?
Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either can stop the blade dropping fully.
Clients normally contact us after spotting one of these:
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Gaps in the fire damper test log
- Rusted damper blades and springs
Wherever there are offices above shops, near Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 Rail station or elsewhere in Heathrow, ductwork may cross fire-resisting floors, and any dampers need testing.

What fire damper testing looks like in Heathrow
There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities, about 7 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 17 hotels and B&Bs on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of central Heathrow. Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. Heathrow is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises. For Heathrow, the closest hospital is Harlington, roughly 1.6 miles north. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital.
Osterley House, about 4.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses near Heathrow, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later. A school like Bedfont Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.
Heathrow is about 2 miles north-west of Feltham, in Surrey. We carry out fire damper testing for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Heathrow and the rest of Surrey. Across Surrey, we cover 395 places, and Heathrow is one of them. There’s also a page for London, about 16 miles away.
Postcode districts we cover here for fire damper testing: TW6. We also cover the places around Heathrow: West Bedfont (1 mile south-west), Hatton (1 mile east), Bedfont (1 mile south-east), Stanwell (1 mile south-west) and Harlington (1 mile north-east). Further out, we also cover Woking (12 miles south-west), Camberley (15 miles south-west), Epsom (12 miles south-east), Ewell (12 miles south-east), Egham (5 miles south-west) and Walton-on-Thames (6 miles south).
Near you in Heathrow
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around The Queen's Arms and Space Studio West London. Heathrow has its own railway station: Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 Rail station. A little further out are Spelthorne Museum (3.5 miles south-west) and Harlington (1.6 miles north). Green spaces nearby include Staines Reservoirs and Crane Meadows.
What staff can safely do
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
