Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Dunbridge
A drop test is simple in principle: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Dunbridge and the rest of Hampshire, logging each one so the record builds year on year. The work covers hospitals and care homes, riser dampers and fusible link fire dampers, and common reasons people get in touch are smoke dampers with no recent test and dirty dampers that may not close.
In a village or hamlet like Dunbridge, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.
Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What fire damper testing looks like in Dunbridge
Dunbridge’s nearest hospital, Romsey Community Hospital, is about 3.9 miles south-east. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital. Fire safety in Dunbridge falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.
The nearest hospital, Romsey Community Hospital, is about 3.9 miles south-east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. If you manage a historic building in the area (Mottisfont Abbey is about 0.7 miles north-east), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.
Dunbridge is about 4 miles north-west of Romsey, in Hampshire. Why deal with it now?
A sticking blade caught on an annual test can be a small repair. Years of corrosion and dirt can mean the whole damper needs replacing instead. Rural sites can’t always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
Do you need fire damper testing in Dunbridge?
Dust settles on damper blades, runners and springs over the years. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either one can hold the blade part-open.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Gaps in the fire damper test log
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
- Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
School buildings such as Awbridge Primary School are normally tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.
What your quote should include
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Proof of insurance

What else we do in Dunbridge
When something else is needed
Fire damper testing can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It does not solve:
- Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
- Deciding where dampers should be fitted
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly.
What the work covers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Riser dampers
What happens on the day
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Dunbridge can be planned properly.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
How to get a quote
To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, pictures of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
Related advice
Dunbridge: your questions answered
Which fire authority looks after Dunbridge?
Fire safety enforcement in Dunbridge is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.
Do you cover smaller places like Dunbridge?
Yes, Dunbridge is part of our area, however small the site. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Typically not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
Where does the waste go?
We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.
How often should fire dampers be tested?
The guidance from BESA is at least annually, by a competent person. A test on completion of installation comes first.
What if a fire damper will not close?
The failure goes on the report, along with what caused it, such as a sticking blade, corrosion or a damaged link. Remedials are offered, either a repair or a replacement damper, and it’s tested again once the work is done.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
What the work involves, part by part
Ceiling voids and risers
Plant rooms and risers can be damp, which leads to corrosion. Signs of corrosion or water are recorded so it can be dealt with.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Buildings where people sleep or need help to leave rely heavily on compartments holding fire back. Annual damper testing is part of keeping that in place.
