Fire damper testing in Carter's Clay, done properly
Not every damper relies on heat. Smoke dampers are motorised and are opened and closed by a control system, so testing means running them through their controls and checking that each blade moves fully and returns. If you have dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and fire damper items raised by an assessor, we can help, from offices and schools, riser dampers and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test normally starts with finding them all.
Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Multi-site and managed buildings
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hampshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Why deal with it now?
Putting testing off does not change whether the dampers will close; it just means you do not know. The guidance from BESA is at least once a year, and a skipped year leaves a hole in your records as well. If the system at a site near Carter's Clay fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we will talk you through it.

How we price fire damper testing
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:
- How big the system is
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Parking and loading at the site
- Whether several sites go on one quote
One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before work begins.
What we need to know
To help us quote quickly, please include:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- The site address and the type of premises
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Carter's Clay
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Carter's Clay?
That is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.
Can you work in Carter's Clay outside opening hours?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Carter's Clay keeps running as normal. Just call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
How far ahead should we book?
Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
What if a damper has no access panel?
We don’t leave it off the report; we note it as not reached. With an access panel fitted, it can be tested on a return visit.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you are not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
Are you accredited?
We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.
What the work involves, part by part
Ceiling voids and risers
Risers and service shafts often hold dampers at each floor. We work through them floor by floor so each one is accounted for.
Smoke dampers
Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. Testing means operating them from the controls to confirm the blade moves all the way.
The process
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Visits to a village like Carter's Clay are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear the space around the work
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
Related advice
Between visits
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
- Diary the annual test well ahead
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
