About our fire damper testing in Cooksbridge
Smoke dampers work differently from fire dampers. Smoke dampers are motorised and are opened and closed by a control system, so testing means running them through their controls and checking that each blade moves fully and returns. We’re often asked to deal with fire damper items raised by an assessor and fire dampers with no recent test record, on motorised smoke dampers, hospitals and care homes and fusible link fire dampers.
Testing in a small place like Cooksbridge is planned around the journey and access, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.
We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What the work involves, part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
In schools and colleges, testing fits well into holidays and weekends, with no classes to work around.
Access panels
Where there’s no access panel, we record the damper as not tested and say why. Fitting a panel means it can be tested on the next visit.
What we do, step by step
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Cooksbridge and turn up when the site is quiet.
- We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
- We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
- Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
- Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
- The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.

Advice
Cooksbridge: your questions answered
Do you work overnight in Cooksbridge?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. It means the site in Cooksbridge keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Cooksbridge?
That’s East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Not normally. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
How long will damper testing take?
Testing takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Bigger sites can be phased, and you can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos to talk it through.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
Who has the duty to keep fire dampers working?
Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, such as the employer, owner, landlord or managing agent. Keeping fire safety systems working, dampers included, is part of their duty.
What happens if a damper fails its test?
It’s listed on the report as a fault and we quote for remedials. After the repair, we test it again so the record shows a pass.
Keeping the system healthy
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:
- Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Diary the annual test well ahead
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, along with an offer to repair or replace them. Once the work is done, the damper is tested again and the record updated.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
Why it’s worth doing now in Cooksbridge
Putting testing off doesn’t change whether the dampers will close; it just means you don’t know. The guidance from BESA is at least once a year, and a skipped year leaves a hole in your records as well. Somewhere as small as Cooksbridge, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.
What you pay depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing
We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- What state the system is in
- Parking and loading at the site
- Any permits to work or inductions
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Asking for a quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- The site address and the type of premises
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
To get a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We normally come back within one working day.
Do you need fire damper testing in Cooksbridge?
Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. If there’s no hatch to reach them, they slip off everyone’s list, and one that can’t be reached can’t be tested.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Dampers clogged with dust or grease
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
- Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
- Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
A school like Hamsey Community Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.
