What the work involves, part by part

Smoke dampers

If a smoke damper won’t operate when signalled, it goes on the report as a failure, along with what we saw.

Fusible link fire dampers

The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Chambers' Green

The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. When one sticks, has a damaged link or is corroded, we report it and offer remedials rather than leaving you with a problem and no fix. The work covers wall and floor dampers, fusible link fire dampers and riser dampers, and the jobs we see most are blades that jam part-way when released and motorised smoke dampers due for testing.

Somewhere as small as Chambers' Green, fire dampers are typically found in a school, a care home, a hotel or a converted building, wherever there is one. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How we price fire damper testing

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • The times the site is available
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The number of sites or systems

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.

What to send for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What fire damper testing looks like in Chambers' Green

About 43 miles out from central London, Chambers' Green is part of the South East area we work across. Evening, overnight and weekend visits are all possible. Fire safety in Chambers' Green falls to Kent Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

For schools like Pluckley Church of England Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear. Historic houses near Chambers' Green, with Godinton House about 3.7 miles east, are a reminder that older buildings can hold dampers in unexpected places. If you look after a building near Pluckley station with a fire risk assessment due, a damper test with a full record is worth having first.

Why deal with it now?

Sites in Chambers' Green tested every year build up a history for each damper, which shows patterns early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it before it becomes a failure. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Chambers' Green: your questions answered

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Chambers' Green?

It’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Chambers' Green. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.

Will you come out to Chambers' Green?

Yes, Chambers' Green is part of our area, however small the site. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Is a quote from pictures possible?

Yes, if we can see what we need. If not, a site survey comes first, and the quote follows that.

Where does the waste go?

It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

The duty falls on the responsible person for the premises. That is often the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. We carry out the testing and give them the records.

Who is the responsible person?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

What happens on the day

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Chambers' Green.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. Each damper is found and checked for access.
  3. We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

How to prepare

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Clear the space around the work

How to get a quote

For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We usually come back within one working day.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
  • Keep to at least yearly testing

Make sure trades working in ceilings and risers know where the dampers sit, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. Anything they disturb should be checked again.

Make sure every damper can be reached. Where there’s no hatch, an access panel makes testing possible ahead of the next visit.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

When it’s something else

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
  • Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
