Your questions about fire damper testing in Basted
Do you cover smaller places like Basted?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Basted included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Which fire authority looks after Basted?
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Basted. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Can you quote from pictures?
Yes, for many jobs. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and we usually come back within one working day. If photos are not enough, we will survey first.
How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?
The guidance from BESA is at least annually, by a competent person. A test on completion of installation comes first.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
Will we get a certificate for the dampers?
We test, record and report, rather than certify dampers to a standard. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.
Which sectors do you work in?
Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
Fire damper testing in Basted, done properly
In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked in each part of the building. We’re often asked to deal with fire dampers with no recent test record and dampers that stick or won’t close fully, on motorised smoke dampers, hospitals and care homes and offices and schools.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What a clean will not put right
Fire damper testing cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
- Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
- Designing the building’s fire compartments
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Offices and schools
- Hospitals and care homes
- Wall and floor dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Riser dampers
How the job changes from site to site
Fusible link fire dampers
Spring-operated fire dampers need testing at least once a year. A weak spring or a sticking blade shows up when the damper is dropped.
Smoke dampers
A smoke damper that does not respond to its controls is recorded as a fault, with a note of what we found.
Why act early in Basted
A damper that’s stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. A planned visit to Basted is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.
Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we will price it together.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.
The process
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. In a small place like Basted, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.
- We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
- Each damper is located and reached through its access panel.
- Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
- We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
- We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
Get a fixed quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What staff can safely do
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Basted buildings and fire safety
The FSA’s food hygiene register lists about 8 schools, colleges and universities and about 5 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises with registered kitchens or food service in Basted and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. For Basted, the closest hospital is Sevenoaks Hospital, roughly 4.8 miles west. Hospitals are a good example of a building with fire dampers across many floors and departments. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Basted. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
For buildings around Borough Green & Wrotham station with ducted ventilation, any fire dampers need an annual test at least. Old Soar Manor, about 1.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses near Basted, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later.

Signs you need fire damper testing in Basted
Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. Where the duct carries grease or cooking vapour, grease coats them too, and either can stop the blade dropping fully.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Buildings with no damper register
- Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
Healthcare buildings such as Sevenoaks Hospital (about 4.8 miles west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.
What your quote should include
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Whether a written report and photos are included
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
