Extract fan cleaning across St Denys

What extract fan cleaning looks like in St Denys

At about 2 miles from the coast, St Denys is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. There are about 208 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 110 takeaways across St Denys and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Where they cook under a canopy, an extract fan is pulling grease-laden air through its blades every service. St Denys is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

For kitchens close to St Denys station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to St Denys is Royal South Hants Hospital, about 0.9 miles south-west.

How we handle extract fan cleaning in St Denys

If the ducts are the arteries, the fan is the heart. A heart under strain works harder for less. Our job is to clear it, check it runs smoothly and record what we found, before signing it off. If you have a fan that has never been cleaned and grease escaping from the fan outlet, we can put it right.

Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like St Denys gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Leave it or put it right?

The fan is part of the fire path. TR19® Grease covers the whole extract, fan included and many insurers require the full system to be cleaned to TR19. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. Around St Denys, access is normally simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look for grease, noise and vibration.
  2. Once isolated, we open the fan up.
  3. Each blade is cleaned so the impeller runs evenly.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

How the job changes from site to site

Wall fans

Wall fans often have a short duct, so grease reaches them quickly. They may need cleaning as often as the canopy, which grease readings will show.

Impellers and blades

While the impeller is clean, we can see its condition: cracks, bent blades or wear. We note any concerns.

What extract fan cleaning can’t fix

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Electrical faults in the fan’s supply or controls (an electrician’s job)
  • A fan that will not start
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Questions from St Denys

Does coastal air change anything about extract fan cleaning in St Denys?

It can. Salt air reaches St Denys, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.

Will you come out to St Denys?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, St Denys included. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

What paperwork do I get after a fan clean?

A photo report, including the fan’s condition and the next clean date. Keep it with your maintenance log.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Can the fan be cleaned between full cleans?

Yes, we can clean just the fan. That helps when the fan needs attention before the next full clean, but it does not replace a full TR19 clean.

What’s TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.

Can you work evenings and weekends?

Yes. Much of our work happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so you do not have to close during trading.

When to call us in St Denys

By the time air reaches the fan, it has passed the canopy, filters and duct. Whatever grease is still in it settles on the impeller and inside the housing where the spinning blades spread it around.

What we are most often called out for:

  • A fan that hums, whines or rumbles
  • A fan that no longer moves enough air
  • A heavily greased fan housing
  • A motor area thick with grease

School kitchens, at schools like St Denys Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether VAT is included
