How we handle extract fan cleaning in Speen
We’ve been trading since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and full insurance. Common call-outs are for a fan coated in grease inside its housing and an extract fan that vibrates or rattles, across axial fans, in-line fans and roof-mounted fans.
For a kitchen in or near Speen, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

Grease, kitchens and Speen
Food Standards Agency records include about 24 pubs, bars and clubs and about 6 hotels and B&Bs within about 1.5 miles of central Speen. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Speen is covered by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Food hygiene inspections in Speen are the job of West Berkshire council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Parish Church of St Mary or anywhere around Speen, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Speen is West Berkshire Community Hospital, about 2.4 miles east.

Why act early in Speen
Grease on a roof fan can also escape outside. It marks the area around the outlet and leaves more fuel outside, which is one more reason to keep it clean. In a small place like Speen, a system that fails can take a site out of use.
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Food hygiene inspections in Speen are carried out by West Berkshire council. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Speen?
That is Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Can you set up regular visits?

Are you insured?
Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.
Do you cover Speen?
Yes. Speen is part of the area we cover, within the South East and London area we cover.

What’s the cleaning interval for an extract fan?
It depends on how many hours the kitchen cooks in BESA guidance. Heavy use means at least every 3 months, light use at least every 12, fan included.
What happens on the day
Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Speen before we set off.
- We find the fan and check how it’s reached and how it’s isolated.
- With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
- Grease is scraped from the impeller blades and the inside of the housing.
- Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
- The fan is put back into service, checked and photographed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Move anything stored near the system
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
Getting a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before work begins.

Looking after it afterwards
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Check filters are seated before cooking
- Make sure the fan is included each time
- Leave a clear route to the fan
- Flag smoke lingering at the canopy
Where the fan needs repair rather than cleaning, the report says so. Fan repair and replacement are services we offer too, so you have one point of contact.
Don’t run the kitchen with the extract off. Air that keeps moving carries vapour out rather than letting it settle, so keeping it running helps keep it clean.
Part by part
Wall fans
A wall fan pushes the air straight outside. We isolate it, then clean the blades and housing.
Kitchens with long cooking hours
Kitchens that cook 12 to 16 hours a day put the most grease through their fans. Under BESA guidance, heavy use means cleaning at least every 3 months, fan included.
Common problems we fix in Speen
By the time air reaches the fan, it has passed the canopy, filters and duct. The grease that is left lands on the blades and the casing, and the spinning blades fling it onto the walls of the housing.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- A heavily greased fan housing
- Burning smells from the fan area
- A fan that has never been cleaned
- Grease around the motor and its mounts
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Robert Sandilands Primary School and Nursery, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Proof of insurance
- What hours they’ll be on site
What your team can do, and what needs us
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.
