FAQs for Merrow
Do you work in villages like Merrow?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Merrow is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Can you come to Merrow after we close?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us with your opening times and we will plan around them.
How much notice should we give?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
How do you protect the area?
We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.
Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?
Yes. The whole system is cleaned, from the canopy to the discharge, and the fan sits right in that path, so it’s cleaned too.
What accreditations do you have?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. We work across South East England and London, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.
Extract fan cleaning in Merrow
If the ducts are the arteries, the fan is the heart. A greasy fan works harder and moves less air. Our job is to clear it, check it runs smoothly and record what we found, before signing it off. We’re often asked to deal with vibration from an unbalanced impeller and a fan left out of previous cleans, on discharge points, centrifugal fans and roof-mounted fans.
Kitchens around a place like Merrow are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Grease, kitchens and Merrow
Food Standards Agency data counts about 16 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 4 takeaways and sandwich shops within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Merrow. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on a fan that gathers grease as it runs. Merrow is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Kitchens in Merrow get their food hygiene inspections from Guildford council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Bushy Hill Junior School or anywhere near Merrow, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Clandon Park, about 0.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses near Merrow; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

Why act early in Merrow
A greasy fan has to work harder to move the same air. Less air is pulled from the kitchen, so heat and smoke linger and the motor works harder. A planned visit to Merrow fits your hours; an emergency doesn’t.
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.

What we do, step by step
We are used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near Merrow when you book.
- First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
- With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
- The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
- We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
- The fan goes back into service with a report on its condition.
How to prepare
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
Ask for a quote
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Advice
Do you need extract fan cleaning in Merrow?
Poor filters mean a greasier fan. When filters do not seal, grease goes straight through to the fan, so the fan takes far more than it should.
Clients typically contact us after spotting something like this:
- Hot, greasy smells near the fan
- Weak extraction at the canopy
- A fan left out of previous cleans
- Thick grease on the impeller and casing
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St John the Evangelist or anywhere around Merrow, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What affects the cost of extract fan cleaning
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:
- How easy every part is to reach
- How many systems or sites are involved
- How big the system is
- The condition we find in the survey
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.
What we need to know
What to send for a quote:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Watch for grease marks around the outlet
- Make sure the fan is included each time
- Run the extract throughout cooking
- Listen for new noises or vibration from the fan
The area around the fan is left clean, with waste grease removed. Wherever the fan is, the area around it is cleaned down.
Keep the whole system on its cleaning cycle. A fan cleaned with the rest of the system on time rarely gets badly coated, in line with BESA guidance.
What your team can do, and what needs us
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
