Signs you need extract fan cleaning in Groombridge

Each blade collects a slightly different amount. Over time, that imbalance shakes the fan and puts strain on the bearings. Left too long, grease turns into wear.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Weak extraction at the canopy
  • A motor area thick with grease
  • An extract fan that vibrates or rattles
  • Fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan

A hospital like Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital, about 3.5 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

What your quote should include

  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the quote shows VAT

How we handle extract fan cleaning in Groombridge

Is the extract fan louder than it used to be, or the airflow weaker? Tell us about it when you call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and you will get a fixed price, typically within one working day. If you are dealing with a fan that has never been cleaned and a fan motor running hot under a coat of grease, we can put it right.

Somewhere as small as Groombridge, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Groombridge, let us know and we’ll plan around it.

  1. First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. Grease is scraped from the impeller blades and the inside of the housing.
  4. Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
  5. We reassemble, run the fan and photograph the result.

Preparing for the visit

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Advice

Aftercare tips

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Keep records of every fan clean
  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Make sure the fan is included each time
  • Keep the fan on whenever the range is lit

A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. A fan-only clean is recorded in the photo report.

The fan stays cleaner when less grease gets past the canopy. Keep the grease filters clean, fitted and in place, and replace any that are damaged.

Part by part

Impellers and blades

Coated blades move less air. We clean each blade back to its surface, so the fan can run as intended.

Fan housings and motors

Inside the casing, grease is thrown onto the walls. We clean it along with the blades.

Groombridge questions

Which council inspects kitchens in Groombridge?

The local authority for Groombridge is Wealden council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Groombridge?

Fire safety enforcement in Groombridge is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Is it safe to clean the fan while the kitchen is open?

It has to be off and isolated before anyone touches it. Cleans are done when the kitchen is closed, so cooking isn’t affected.

How often should the extract fan be cleaned?

The fan follows the full system’s interval, from every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours of cooking a day to every 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Grease readings and the fan’s condition can show it needs more.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

Not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.

Why is my extract fan noisy?

Grease on the blades and housing is one of the usual causes, since uneven grease makes it run out of balance. It can also be wear in the bearings or motor, which our report will flag.

What affects the quote in Groombridge

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The condition we find in the survey

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

What we need to know

What to send for a quote:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

Groombridge kitchens: local notes

About 29 miles out from central London, Groombridge is part of the South East area we work across. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site. Groombridge sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Groombridge St Thomas' Church of England Primary School or anywhere near Groombridge, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Thomas the Apostle, or anywhere in Groombridge, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
