Common questions in Forest Side

Do you work in villages like Forest Side?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Forest Side included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Forest Side?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Forest Side. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What do you do to protect the area?

Protection goes down first: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

Are you accredited?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What about areas you can’t get to?

The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.

About our extract fan cleaning in Forest Side

The fan is cleaned as part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but some fans need cleaning between full cleans, for example when it’s noisy or vibrating. Where only the fan is cleaned, the report says so. Common call-outs are for a heavily greased fan housing and fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan, on centrifugal fans, in-line fans and axial fans.

Somewhere as small as Forest Side, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with pictures, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Extract fan cleaning in Forest Side: the local picture

Food Standards Agency records list about 57 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 20 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Forest Side. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on a fan that gathers grease as it runs. In Forest Side, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Isle of Wight council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Forest Side sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Carisbrooke Castle is about 1.3 miles south), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St. Mary's Church, or anywhere in Forest Side, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Forest Side is about 1 mile north-west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Whatever kind of site you run in Forest Side, extract fan cleaning is something we can help with. What extract fan cleaning can’t fix

Not every problem is solved by extract fan cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • An undersized fan that cannot cope
  • A motor that has burnt out
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

What we work on in Forest Side

  • Discharge points
  • In-line fans
  • Axial fans
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Fan housings

How it works

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes an hour or two for most single fans, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Forest Side knowing what to expect.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look for grease, noise and vibration.
  2. Once isolated, we open the fan up.
  3. The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.

How to prepare

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

What the work involves, part by part

Kitchens with long cooking hours

Long cooking hours mean more grease reaches the fan. BESA guidance sets at least 3-monthly cleaning for that level of use, fan included.

Impellers and blades

The blades of the impeller do the work, and it collects grease unevenly. That is what unbalances the fan, so it’s cleaned carefully blade by blade.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

When to call us in Forest Side

Grease on a fan is a fire risk, in Forest Side as anywhere. A fire in the duct can reach the fan and the grease around it, and a hot, struggling motor does not help.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A fan that no longer moves enough air
  • A fan left out of previous cleans
  • A fan motor running hot under a coat of grease
  • Grease stains around the discharge

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Carisbrooke College tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether a survey comes first
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Proof of insurance
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Check filters are seated before cooking
  • Listen for new noises or vibration from the fan

A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If only the fan is cleaned, the photo report says so.

A change in how the fan sounds is worth noting. New noise or vibration often means grease is building on the impeller and early action can save a repair.
