Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Blackheath
Any fan serving a kitchen in Blackheath is cleaned the same careful way as anywhere else: isolated first, then opened, scraped and degreased. The result is photographed for your records. If you’re dealing with weak extraction at the canopy and a fan that hums, whines or rumbles, we can put it right, from fan housings, axial fans and in-line fans onwards.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

When to call us in Blackheath
Grease builds up unevenly on the blades. Over time, that imbalance shakes the fan and puts strain on the bearings. What starts as a grease problem can become a mechanical one.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- A heavily greased fan housing
- Weak extraction at the canopy
- Fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan
- A smell of hot grease from the extract
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Martin or anywhere around Blackheath, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Blackheath: your questions answered
Which environmental health team covers Blackheath?
Kitchens in Blackheath are inspected by Waverley council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Blackheath?
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Blackheath. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
What do you do with what you remove?
It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.
What should I send you?
A short description and a few pictures plus the address and your hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s the responsible person: normally the employer or whoever controls the premises. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What’s the cleaning interval for an extract fan?
At least as often as the rest of the extract, which BESA guidance sets by daily cooking hours: every 3, 6 or 12 months. Some fans need attention sooner.
What affects the cost of extract fan cleaning
The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:
- What state the system is in
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- Parking and loading at the site
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.
What to send for a quote
To help us quote quickly, please include:
- Any previous report or certificate
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Problems your staff have spotted
- The site address and the type of premises
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
What extract fan cleaning can’t fix
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A fan that will not start
- An impeller that’s bent or split
- Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer.
Where we work
- Roof-mounted fans
- Fan housings
- Axial fans
- Discharge points
- In-line fans
- Centrifugal fans
How it works
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Blackheath knowing what to expect.
- We locate the fan and plan how to reach and isolate it.
- It’s isolated so it can’t run while we work.
- We scrape the heavy grease from the blades and housing.
- The fan is degreased, taking care around the motor.
- We reassemble, run and photograph the fan.
Getting ready for the visit
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Blackheath kitchens: local notes
The fire and rescue service for Blackheath is Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In Blackheath, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Waverley council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St. Luke’s Hospital about 2.6 miles north-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Chilworth CofE (Aided) Infant School or anywhere near Blackheath, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Keeping the system healthy
How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Watch for grease marks around the outlet
- Book the fan into every full TR19 clean
- File the fan’s report with your other records
- Keep access to the fan clear
A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If only the fan is cleaned, the photo report says so.
A change in how the fan sounds is worth noting. New noise or vibration often means grease is building on the impeller and early action can save a repair.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
