Extract fan cleaning in Alfold

About our extract fan cleaning in Alfold

Not all extract fans are the same: roof-mounted units, inline fans within the duct, and wall fans. The way in depends on the type, and we plan that during the survey. We’re often asked to deal with grease stains around the discharge and weak extraction at the canopy, across fan housings, in-line fans and discharge points.

In a small place like Alfold, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Alfold questions

Do you work at weekends in Alfold?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Alfold does not have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.

Is Alfold within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Why has my extract fan got louder?

Often it’s grease on the impeller. Uneven build-up on the blades throws the fan off balance, causing vibration and noise. If cleaning does not, the bearings or motor may need attention.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® itself is not law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

Should the extract fan be cleaned as part of TR19?

Yes, it should be. A TR19 Grease clean covers everything from canopy to discharge, and the fan is a key part of it, so it’s cleaned too.

How the visit works

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Alfold run smoothly.

  1. First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
  2. Power to the fan is isolated before anyone touches it.
  3. The impeller and the housing around it are scraped clean.
  4. Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
  5. The fan is put back into service, checked and photographed.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Let us know about parking and loading

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Food hygiene inspections in Alfold are the job of Waverley council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Leave it or put it right?

A greasy fan has to work harder to move the same air. Less air is pulled from the kitchen, so heat and smoke linger, while the motor runs under more strain. With notice, the visit to Alfold can be fitted around your bookings and events.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.

Different parts, different methods

Roof-mounted fans

Grease can escape from a roof fan onto the surrounding surface, so the outlet area is checked too. Heavy staining is noted on the report.

Impellers and blades

While the impeller is clean, we can see its condition: chips, distortion or wear. Anything we see goes on the report.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Alfold

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Surrey. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.
