Questions from Alfold
Can you clean school ventilation in Alfold during the holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Alfold. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the dates the site is empty.
Do you work overnight in Alfold?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The site is handed back ready to open. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Does the AHU have to be shut down for cleaning?
Yes. The unit has to be shut down and isolated before it’s opened. The shutdown is planned with whoever runs the building.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
Is Alfold in your area?
Yes. Alfold is part of the area we cover, as part of our area across London and the South East.
What about areas you can’t get to?
We record them on the report, with pictures where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
How we handle AHU cleaning in Alfold
The fan pushes every bit of air in the system, so dirt on the impeller and housing gets spread around. We clean the fan section along with the rest of the unit, with the unit switched off and made safe first. The work covers internal panels, drain trays and filter sections, and common reasons people get in touch are air handling units with blocked filters and air handling units never cleaned inside.
Somewhere as small as Alfold, ducted ventilation is usually limited to a school, a care home, a surgery or a converted business building, wherever there is one, but where it’s fitted, it needs the same inspection and cleaning as anywhere.
Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.
Part by part
Filters
Filters are the first line of defence in the unit. As part of the clean, filters are checked and cleaned or replaced as agreed, and clean the filter housing.
Internal casing and panels
The inside walls and floor of the casing collect dust and debris. Each section is cleaned from the intake through to the outlet.

What we do, step by step
Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes anything from half a day for one small unit to several shifts for a plant room full of them. A few photos of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Alfold.
- First the unit is surveyed, from photos or a visit, and the scope agreed.
- The unit is shut down with your site team and the area protected.
- We clean or change the filters as agreed, then clean the coils, fan and internal panels.
- Drain trays are cleared and cleaned and the outlet checked.
- We close up the unit and send the certificate and before and after pictures.
How to prepare
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
Getting a quote

Aftercare tips
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Check the drain tray is emptying during routine visits
- File each AHU report in the maintenance log
- Keep inspection doors on the unit in good order
- Stick to the filter change plan
Restart the unit with your site team or maintenance contractor once we have finished. Check the drain tray is emptying over the first few days to confirm water is draining away.
Make sure access doors and panels on the unit open easily. If a section is hard to get into, it tends not to get checked.
Why it’s worth doing now in Alfold
Standing water in a drain tray does not clear itself. Left alone, it can overflow, leak into the plant area or ceiling below and spread smells through the system. Clearing it now is a much smaller job. Rural sites can’t always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.
The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.
