About our ductwork cleaning in Sturry
Every duct has its own route. A few metres to an outside wall, or a riser up through the building to a roof fan. The survey traces the route and finds every access point before we quote. Common call-outs are for smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork and thick crusts of old grease along the duct, across horizontal duct runs, access panels and multi-storey ducts.
In a smaller place like Sturry, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What the work involves, part by part
Horizontal duct runs
Flat runs of duct link the canopy to the riser or the outside wall. Grease drops out of the slowing air along them, so each section is cleaned through its access panels.
Access panels
Every section of duct is cleaned through an access panel. Where there are none, those sections can’t be cleaned and the report has to say so.
Why deal with it now?
Under BESA guidance, the mean grease level should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans. A reading of 500 microns or more at any point means a spot clean straight away. Putting off the clean only pushes readings higher. You choose the date of a planned visit, and a breakdown never asks.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

What staff can safely do
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Questions from Sturry
Which fire authority looks after Sturry?
Sturry is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Can a school canteen extract in Sturry be done out of term time?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Sturry. You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
What happens if there are not enough access panels?
Sections out of reach are written down on the report, in line with TR19. New panels can be fitted to reach them in future.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Some pictures and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. We will ask for anything else we need.
How can I tell if my extract ducts are dirty?
A grease thickness test gives the answer. Using a Wet Film Thickness Test or Deposit Thickness Test, we check the grease at set points. BESA guidance says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns, and 500 or more anywhere needs immediate spot cleaning.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
What happens on the day
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. Visits to a place like Sturry are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
- We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
- Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
- We test again, take photos and note any part that couldn’t be reached.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Clear loose items from the work area
Getting a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
Advice
What else we do in Sturry
Keeping the system healthy
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
- Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
- Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
File the paperwork in the maintenance log. It’s the evidence an insurer or inspector may ask for, and the pictures make the duct’s condition easy to see.
Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Sturry
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and photos, so each one has its own record.
Ductwork cleaning in Sturry: the local picture
There are about 8 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 5 sandwich bars and takeaways in Sturry and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Behind every canopy among them is a run of ductwork that collects grease out of sight. Sturry sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s Canterbury City council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Sturry. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
If you run a café or takeaway near Sturry station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Sturry Church of England Primary School or anywhere near Sturry, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St Martins Hospital about 2.1 miles south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
