Grease, kitchens and Racton
Racton lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. It’s Chichester council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Racton. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Racton sits within the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Bourne Community College or anywhere near Racton, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Racton Church or elsewhere in Racton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Warblington Castle is about 3.9 miles south-west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.
Racton is about 3 miles north-east of Emsworth, in West Sussex. About our ductwork cleaning in Racton
In doctor’s terms, the ductwork is the system’s arteries: diagnose where grease has built up, clear it and confirm the result. Readings taken before and after show the difference, alongside before and after pictures. The work covers vertical risers, multi-storey ducts and access panels, and common reasons people get in touch are a duct nobody has opened in years and grease seeping out of the duct seams.
In a small place like Racton, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Racton
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Questions from Racton
Is ductwork cleaning any different in a coastal place like Racton?
It can. Being within about 3 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Racton than inland. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.
Who inspects food businesses in Racton?
In Racton, it’s Chichester council that carries out food hygiene inspections. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.
What do you do with what you remove?
It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.
Do you install duct access panels?
Yes, we do. We will point out where panels are needed, and we can fit them so those sections are cleaned in future.
Are you accredited?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
Do we have to stop cooking while the ducts are cleaned?
We plan the clean when you are not cooking. Overnight and weekend work is common, so no service is lost.
What’s TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.
Different parts, different methods
Multi-storey and shared buildings
Long ducts in larger buildings can mean several visits. We agree a sequence that suits the building, out of hours where possible.
Vertical risers
Cleaning a riser needs access along its height. Any part that can’t be safely reached is recorded.
What affects the quote in Racton
Your quote is based on your site. We take into account:
- The condition we find in the survey
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- The size of the system
- Any permits to work or inductions
You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.
Helping us quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:
- The postcode and the type of business
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll usually have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
What happens on the day
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Somewhere as small as Racton, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
- Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
- Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
- Readings and pictures are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
Ask for a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Related advice
Leave it or put it right?
Grease left in a duct in Racton hardens over time. It bakes into a hard layer that takes far longer to remove, so the later the clean, the bigger the job. Planning a trip to Racton ahead is easier for everyone than a rushed one.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

What your team can do, and what needs us
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Between visits
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Don’t block access panels with shelving or stock
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Keep to the interval on the report
- Keep the fan on while anything is cooking
You will have a recommended date for the next clean, worked out from the grease we found and how long you cook each day, in line with BESA guidance.
Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
