About our ductwork cleaning in Pondwell

No two duct runs are the same, in Pondwell or anywhere else. Some run a short distance to an outside wall, others climb several floors to the roof. We map the route during the survey, so we know where to get in and how long it will take. If you’re dealing with a grease test showing the duct is overdue and grease seeping out of the duct seams, we can put it right, from vertical risers, access panels and horizontal duct runs onwards.

Somewhere as small as Pondwell, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

A written report with pictures follows each visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment
  • Keep access panels clear of stored items

File the paperwork in the maintenance log. An insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask to see it, and the photos make the duct’s condition easy to see.

Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. Moving air carries vapour through rather than letting it settle, so switching off early adds to the build-up.

What a clean won’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • Leaking duct joints that need repair
  • A worn-out fan that needs replacing
  • Sections that cannot be reached safely without new access (those are recorded, and panels can be fitted)

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think before you book.

Kitchen extracts in Pondwell

Pondwell lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Look up Pondwell on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 16 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 3 takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Pondwell. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. Food hygiene inspections in Pondwell are the job of Isle of Wight council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Gosport War Memorial Hospital about 5.3 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. School kitchens, at schools like Nettlestone Primary School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Pondwell is about 2 miles east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Pondwell gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where necessary and a written report with photos. Pondwell is one of 125 places in the Isle of Wight we cover for commercial clients. Portsmouth is in our area too, around 7 miles away.

Postcode districts we cover here for ductwork cleaning: PO33. That includes premises on Pondwell Hill, Gregory Avenue and Wishing Well Close and the roads around them. Pondwell is on the B3330, so it’s easy for us to get to for out-of-hours visits. We also cover Spring Vale (1 mile north), Nettlestone (1 mile south-east), Seaview (1 mile east), Puckpool (1 mile north-west) and Westridge (1 mile west). Further out, we also cover Newport (8 miles west), Cowes (8 miles west), Sandown (5 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south-west) and East Cowes (7 miles west). Remote and island sites need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Your questions about ductwork cleaning in Pondwell

Can you get to a site in Pondwell?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Pondwell is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who inspects food businesses in Pondwell?

In Pondwell, it’s Isle of Wight council that carries out food hygiene inspections. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

How do you clean inside the ductwork?

Through access panels along the duct. Thick deposits are removed by hand before degreasing, such as degreasers, hot water or steam.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

The report shows them clearly. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

What types of premises do you cover?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, plus food production and leisure sites.

What happens if there aren’t enough access panels?

Without a way in, a section can’t be cleaned properly. We record those sections on the report and can fit access panels.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Pondwell?

A vertical riser can run up several floors. Grease collects on the riser walls and gathers at the bottom, where it can pool. Panels along the riser make proper cleaning possible.

The symptoms we’re asked about most include:

  • Sections of duct with no access panels
  • A rancid smell from the extract duct
  • Heavy grease at the base of a riser
  • An insurer asking for TR19 evidence

Where a hall near St. Peter's Church, or anywhere in Pondwell, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Our hiring checklist

What we do, step by step

Everything the job needs comes with us, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Pondwell and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We trace the duct and find every way in.
  2. Grease thickness is measured at set points.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Ask for a quote

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Why it’s worth doing now in Pondwell

A fire in a greasy duct is hard to reach and hard to stop. It can travel through the ductwork to other parts of the building, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. Somewhere as small as Pondwell, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before any work starts.

Different parts, different methods

Bends and transitions

A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. It’s scraped out and degreased, and test it before and after.

Horizontal duct runs

Horizontal runs carry the extract along ceilings and through voids. Grease drops out of the slowing air along them, and we clean them section by section through access panels.
