Ductwork cleaning in Knowle
Each extract duct we take on in Knowle goes through the full routine: we test the grease first, remove thick deposits by hand and degrease what’s left. Post-clean readings and pictures complete the record. Common call-outs are for grease pooling at the foot of the riser and gaps where access panels were never fitted, on attenuators, horizontal duct runs and access panels.
Somewhere as small as Knowle, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

FAQs for Knowle
Is Knowle within the area you cover?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Knowle included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Which environmental health team covers Knowle?
The local authority for Knowle is Winchester City council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Are you accredited?
CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
What is TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What happens if there are not enough access panels?
Every reachable section is cleaned and the rest recorded. Fitting extra access panels is the usual answer, and we can do that for you.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
The process
Everything the job needs comes with us, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Knowle knowing what to expect.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
- Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
- The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
- Post-clean readings and pictures go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

For landlords and multi-site operators
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
What affects the quote in Knowle
You will get a fixed price before we start. It takes into account:
- Parking and loading at the site
- The condition of the system
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The size of the system
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.
Asking for a quote
To speed up the quote, send us:
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The postcode and the type of business
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
Need a price for ductwork cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before anything is booked.
What happens if it’s left?
Fire inside a duct is out of sight and out of reach. The duct can carry it to rooms, floors or roof spaces well away from the kitchen, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.
What you get with us

- Work around your opening hours, with 24/7 emergency cover

Ductwork cleaning around Knowle
According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 3 pubs, bars and clubs in and around Knowle, up to about a mile and a half out. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Kitchens in Knowle get their food hygiene inspections from Winchester City council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. The fire and rescue service for Knowle is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Knowle Hospital (about under half a mile north-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Where a hall near Church of St Francis, or anywhere in Knowle, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Orchard Lea Infant School or anywhere near Knowle, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Honest limits
Ductwork cleaning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before work begins. It won’t put right:
- A duct that’s too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
- Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)
If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.
What the work covers
- Multi-storey ducts
- Attenuators
- Access panels
- Vertical risers
- Horizontal duct runs
- Bends and junctions
Looking after it afterwards
So the system stays in good health:
- Report any grease dripping from duct joints
- Keep access panels clear of stored items
- Keep to the interval on the report
- File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the area around them is cleaned down. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.
Watch for warning signs between cleans: grease leaking from duct joints, smells, or a fan that sounds rough. Testing will show whether any section has reached 500 microns.
