Ductwork cleaning across Jack's Hatch

Ductwork cleaning in Jack's Hatch, done properly

Not sure when the ductwork was last cleaned? A few details about the system are a good start when you ring 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll send you a fixed quote for ductwork cleaning, typically within one working day. Typical jobs include gaps where access panels were never fitted and proof of duct cleaning for the insurer, across horizontal duct runs, vertical risers and attenuators.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Ductwork that was poorly designed
  • Faulty fire dampers
  • Duct sections that need replacing

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Vertical risers
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Bends and junctions
  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Access panels

What your team can do, and what needs us

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Jack's Hatch questions

Do you work in villages like Jack's Hatch?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Jack's Hatch included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Jack's Hatch in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Around Jack's Hatch, the Food Standards Agency lists about 9 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

How is kitchen extract ductwork cleaned?

We survey the route, test the grease, then open the access panels. We clean the runs and risers section by section, and test again when we are done.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Can extra access doors be added to the duct?

Yes, we do. We’ll point out where panels are needed, and fitting them means future cleans are more complete.

What happens on the day

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. The timing of a visit to Jack's Hatch is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
  2. We take grease readings along the route.
  3. Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. Panels are closed, readings and photos repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

How to get a quote

Why act early in Jack's Hatch

BESA guidance says grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Anywhere that reaches 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning. Leaving the duct makes those limits harder to keep to. Somewhere as small as Jack's Hatch, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

Different parts, different methods

Attenuators and discharge

Near the discharge, the air has cooled the most, so it can collect more grease than expected. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.

Horizontal duct runs

Flat runs of duct link the canopy to the riser or the outside wall. Grease drops out of the slowing air along them, and we clean them section by section through access panels.

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
  • Keep access panels clear of stored items
  • Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment
  • Report any grease dripping from duct joints

Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the area around them is cleaned down. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. Moving air carries vapour through rather than letting it settle, so switching off early adds to the build-up.

Common problems we fix in Jack's Hatch

A duct with too few access doors cannot be fully cleaned. Sections between panels go uncleaned, sometimes since the system was installed, and grease there keeps thickening unseen.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Gaps where access panels were never fitted
  • Grease leaking from duct joints
  • Grease pooling at the foot of the riser
  • A rancid smell from the extract duct

For schools such as Water Lane Primary Academy, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether VAT is included
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Proof of insurance

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Jack's Hatch kitchens: local notes

There are about 10 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 10 takeaways and sandwich shops across Jack's Hatch and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Behind every canopy among them is a run of ductwork that collects grease out of sight. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service covers Jack's Hatch. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Environmental health officers from Harlow council inspect food businesses in Jack's Hatch. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

A hospital like Princess Alexandra Hospital, about 2.2 miles north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St James with St Luke, or anywhere in Jack's Hatch, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
