About our ductwork cleaning in Highbridge

Each extract duct we take on in Highbridge goes through the full routine: we test the grease first, remove thick deposits by hand and degrease what’s left. Readings are taken again afterwards and pictures go into your report. Common call-outs are for duct runs that can’t be reached and smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork, on multi-storey ducts, vertical risers and attenuators.

Work in a small place like Highbridge starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Inside an extract duct: heavy deposits on the left, cleaned metal on the right

What ductwork cleaning looks like in Highbridge

There are about 10 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 7 sandwich bars and takeaways across Highbridge and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. The duct above a busy canopy coats itself in grease long before anyone sees it. Food hygiene inspections in Highbridge are the job of Winchester City council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. The fire and rescue service for Highbridge is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Mary's Church or elsewhere in Highbridge, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. School kitchens, at schools like Colden Common Primary School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Moorgreen Hospital is the nearest hospital to Highbridge, about 4.3 miles south.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Report any grease dripping from duct joints
  • Ask us about extra access panels where sections cannot be reached
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier

Keep the certificate and report with the fire risk assessment. An insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask to see it, and the pictures make the duct’s condition easy to see.

Some signs mean the duct needs attention sooner: drips from the ductwork, stale smells or a noisy fan. Testing will show whether any section has reached 500 microns.

What happens if it’s left?

Old grease in a duct for a kitchen in Highbridge doesn’t stay soft. Heat and age turn it into a thick, stubborn crust, which makes each delayed clean a bigger one. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Highbridge rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Fixed quotes for ductwork cleaning in Highbridge

Your quote is based on your site. We take into account:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • How big the system is
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We usually come back within one working day.

Highbridge: your questions answered

Which fire authority looks after Highbridge?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Highbridge. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Highbridge in the summer holidays?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. The FSA’s register shows about 6 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Highbridge. Send us your term dates when you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.

Can you fit access panels in our ductwork?

Yes, we install duct access panels. We place them where they help most, and we’ll recommend where.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What shows that the ducts need a clean?

Signs include grease dripping from joints, smells and a fan working harder, but the only sure way is to measure. A WFTT or DTT reading gives a clear answer.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

How do you clean inside the ductwork?

We get into the duct through its access panels. Heavy grease is scraped out by hand, then the surfaces are degreased with a method that suits the deposit, such as degreasers, hot water or steam.

How it works

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Highbridge.

  1. First we diagnose: the route, the access and the grease levels.
  2. A fixed quote follows, based on what we found.
  3. Each section is cleaned in turn through its access panel.
  4. Bends, risers and the base of each riser get extra attention.
  5. Readings, photos and a recommended next clean date complete the job.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

In taller buildings, a riser may pass through several floors and fire compartments, so fire dampers may be fitted where it crosses them. Damper testing is a separate service.

Access panels

Panels have to seal properly once they’re closed so the duct stays tight. A damaged panel is noted on the report.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
  • A worn-out fan that needs replacing
  • Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before you book.
