Common questions in Fern
Do you work overnight in Fern?
Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. The work in Fern can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Fern?
Kitchens in Fern are inspected by Buckinghamshire council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Do you install duct access panels?
Yes, we install duct access panels. We place them where they help most, and we’ll recommend where.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.
What if part of the duct cannot be reached?
Every reachable section is cleaned and the rest recorded. Extra panels can be installed, and we can do that for you.
About our ductwork cleaning in Fern
Grease in a duct is hidden, which is exactly why it’s dangerous. Flames pulled in from the cooking line can ignite it, and fire can then run along the ductwork to other parts of the building. Removing it is the whole point. The work covers attenuators, access panels and horizontal duct runs, and the jobs we see most are stale grease odours from the duct and gaps where access panels were never fitted.
Work in a small place like Fern starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Why deal with it now?
TR19® isn’t law, but the duty to manage fire risk is. The Fire Safety Order 2005 makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and grease in the duct is part of that. With notice, the visit to Fern can be fitted around your bookings and events.
Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.

What a clean will not put right
Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we will tell you before any work starts. It doesn’t solve:
- Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
- Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
- A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

How it works
We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Fern.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- We take grease readings along the route.
- Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
- Heavy deposits come out by hand, then each section is degreased.
- We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.
Before we arrive
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
Getting a quote

What your team can do, and what needs us
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
How the job changes from site to site
Horizontal duct runs
Grease settles on the floor of a flat duct run. We scrape out the heavy layer first, then the walls and roof are cleaned too.
Attenuators and discharge
At the end of the duct is the discharge. Grease can collect there and stain the area around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.

A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Where a hall near Church of St John the Baptist, or anywhere in Fern, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Between visits
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
- Leave a way through to the access panels
- Run the extract fan throughout service
- Ask us about extra access panels where sections cannot be reached
Keep the certificate and report with the fire risk assessment. It’s the evidence an insurer or inspector may ask for, and the pictures make the duct’s condition easy to see.
The less grease gets past the canopy, the cleaner the duct stays. Keep the filters clean, well fitted and in place whenever you cook.
How we price ductwork cleaning
The quote reflects the site in front of us. We take into account:
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- The number of sites or systems
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
What we need to know
You do not need the technical terms. Just send:
- Any previous report or certificate
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- The site address and the type of premises
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.
