Ductwork cleaning in Blackwall

Why deal with it now?

A fire in a greasy duct is hard to reach and hard to stop. The duct can carry it to rooms, floors or roof spaces well away from the kitchen, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. It’s better booked as a planned job in Blackwall than handled as an emergency.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What you get with us

Ductwork cleaning in Blackwall

Not every duct has enough access panels. TR19 calls for any section we couldn’t reach to be recorded, and we can fit new access panels so it’s cleaned next time. It’s better to know than to assume. The work covers access panels, multi-storey ducts and attenuators, and people most often call us about duct runs with no cleaning record and years of grease along the duct floor.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Blackwall, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

How we price ductwork cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • What state the system is in
  • The size of the system
  • The number of sites or systems
  • How easy every part is to reach

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Need a price for ductwork cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before anything is booked.

The process

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. In a London area like Blackwall, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.

  1. We trace the duct and find every way in.
  2. We take grease readings along the route.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
  4. Heavy deposits come out by hand, then each section is degreased.
  5. Panels are closed, readings and photos repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

What ductwork cleaning looks like in Blackwall

Food Standards Agency records include about 44 pubs, bars and clubs and about 18 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within about 1.5 miles of central Blackwall. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Environmental health officers from Tower Hamlets council inspect food businesses in Blackwall. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Blackwall is covered by London Fire Brigade. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Woolmore Primary School or anywhere near Blackwall, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Poplar Hospital is the nearest hospital to Blackwall, about less than half a mile north-west. If you run a café or takeaway near Canary Wharf station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

How the job changes from site to site

Attenuators and discharge

At the end of the duct is the discharge. It can gather grease and mark the wall or roof around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.

Vertical risers

A riser takes the duct up through one or more floors. Grease collects on the walls and at the foot of the riser, which is one of the points we test.

Your questions about ductwork cleaning in Blackwall

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Blackwall?

That’s Tower Hamlets council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Blackwall. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Is parking a problem for work in Blackwall?

A loading bay, a visitor permit or off-street space near the site in Blackwall makes the visit easier to plan. Much of our London work is done overnight, which helps.

What’s TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes normally come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

How much does ductwork cleaning cost in Blackwall?

The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Call for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Is Blackwall in your area?

Yes. We work in Blackwall and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Leave a way through to the access panels
  • Run the extract fan throughout service
  • Keep your cleaning records together
  • Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up

File the paperwork in the maintenance log. It’s the evidence an insurer or inspector may ask for, and the pictures make the duct’s condition easy to see.

Extra access panels mean more of the duct gets cleaned each time. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.
