Canopy cleaning in Woodhall Farm

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include overflowing grease troughs and gutters and an EHO comment about the canopy, on grease gutters, wall canopies and plenum chambers.

In a smaller place like Woodhall Farm, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Wall canopies

Long wall canopies often have several filter banks. We work along the canopy section by section, with photos for each.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Environmental health officers from Dacorum council inspect food businesses in Woodhall Farm. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Fire safety in Woodhall Farm falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Woodhall Farm: your questions answered

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Woodhall Farm?

Fire safety enforcement in Woodhall Farm is handled by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Can school kitchens in Woodhall Farm be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 35 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Woodhall Farm. Just call 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

We clean when you’re not cooking, so most kitchens don’t lose a service. We work evenings, nights and weekends.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not typically. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A canopy only holds so much grease. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. We work out the approach when we survey, from photos or a visit.

Common problems we fix in Woodhall Farm

Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. As the canopy cools, condensation forms, carrying grease with it. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Grease filters blocking between washes

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Alexandra Road Congregational Church, or anywhere in Woodhall Farm, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Our hiring checklist

When it’s something else

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Bent or broken filters

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies

What happens on the day

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Getting to the system matters more than parking in a place like Woodhall Farm, so let us know how to reach it.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

How to get a quote

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Clean the baffle filters often

The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.

Why it’s worth doing now in Woodhall Farm

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. That’s a hygiene problem as well as a fire one, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. It’s better to plan the work at a site near Woodhall Farm than wait for a failure.

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we will talk you through it.
