Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Well Head

The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. If you have grease dripping from the canopy edge and filters that clog soon after cleaning, we can help, from canopy light fittings, island canopies and wall canopies onwards.

In a small place like Well Head, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

A written report with pictures follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Honest limits

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
  • A light fitting that does not work
  • A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Island canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters

Canopy cleaning in Well Head: the local picture

The FSA’s data shows about 3 pubs and bars registered in and around Well Head, up to about a mile and a half out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Food hygiene inspections in Well Head are the job of Dover council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Well Head is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Goodnestone Park is about 1.6 miles south), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. School kitchens, at schools like Wingham Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as St Martins Hospital (about 5 miles west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Well Head is about 6 miles east of Canterbury, in Kent. Whatever kind of site you run in Well Head, we can take on canopy cleaning. Visits can be booked for evenings, overnight or weekends so trading isn’t interrupted. Well Head is one of 922 places in Kent we cover for commercial clients. Maidstone is in our area too, about 30 miles from Well Head.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.

The process

There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few hours for most canopies. In a small place like Well Head, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

How to prepare

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Well Head: your questions answered

Do you work at weekends in Well Head?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Well Head?

Food hygiene inspections in Well Head are carried out by Dover council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Are you accredited?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

What’s TR19?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Which canopies and hoods do you clean?

Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. The survey tells us how best to clean yours, from pictures or a visit.

What types of premises do you cover?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, plus food production and leisure sites.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

It takes a few hours for most canopies. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it won’t cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Why deal with it now?

In Well Head, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after and keeping it that way is easier than catching up. Somewhere as small as Well Head, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Well Head

We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • How many systems or sites are involved

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room

To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Then call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
