About our canopy cleaning in Ware

Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. We are often asked to deal with filters that never seem to stay clean and overflowing grease troughs and gutters, on wall canopies, grease gutters and plenum chambers.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

A written report with photos follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Ware can be planned properly.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

What your team can do, and what needs us

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

What canopy cleaning looks like in Ware

The FSA’s data shows about 4 pubs and bars registered within about 1.5 miles of central Ware. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Kitchens in Ware get their food hygiene inspections from Dover council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Ware sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Whether the kitchen is in Ware itself or nearby, a TR19® clean covers the whole system, canopy to discharge.

Ware is about 6 miles south-west of St Lawrence, in Kent. Keeping the system healthy

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Ware?

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

Clients usually contact us after spotting one of these:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • A filter housing caked in grease

Historic houses near Ware, such as Goodnestone Park about 4.3 miles south-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Questions to ask before booking

Ware: your questions answered

Who is the fire and rescue service for Ware?

Ware is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can school kitchens in Ware be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. There are about 2 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Ware. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

What about areas you can’t get to?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Do you work in Ware?

Yes. Ware is part of the area we cover, within the South East and London area we cover.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

A canopy-only clean is possible, but it is not a full TR19 clean. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Why it’s worth doing now in Ware

In Ware, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. A clean hood is a sign the kitchen is cared for, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.

What you get with us

  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • Evenings, overnight and weekends, plus 24/7 emergency callout
  • Fixed quotes from a survey or pictures

Part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Wall canopies

Wall canopies sit against a wall over a cooking line. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • The times the site is available
  • A single visit or a regular plan

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What to send for a quote

We can often survey from pictures. Try to include:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

For canopy cleaning in Ware, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send photos or your last report if you can. We usually send a fixed quote within one working day.
