About our canopy cleaning in Upstreet
The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. We’re often asked to deal with overflowing grease troughs and gutters and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection, on grease gutters, wall canopies and plenum chambers.
Work in a small place like Upstreet starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Upstreet: your questions answered
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Upstreet?
That’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Upstreet?
Kitchens in Upstreet are inspected by Canterbury City council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. Every job is surveyed first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where needed. Then you get a fixed quote.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
What accreditations do you have?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
Size and build-up decide it. As a guide, it takes a few hours for most canopies.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Why deal with it now?
A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. The kitchen gets hotter and smokier while the fan strains. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Different parts, different methods
Island canopies
Everything about an island canopy is on show, so the finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.
Pub and hotel kitchens
In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. A thorough clean puts that right.
How it works
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your pictures. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes a few hours for most canopies. In a small place like Upstreet, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
Get a fixed quote
For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We usually come back within one working day.
Advice

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:
- The condition we find in the survey
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The size of the system
You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.
What to send for a quote
You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- A few general shots of the system
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Your last certificate, test record or report
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Grease, kitchens and Upstreet
Food Standards Agency records list about 3 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Upstreet. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. It’s Canterbury City council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Upstreet. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Upstreet sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in Upstreet, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. For schools such as Chislet Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Upstreet is St Martins Hospital, about 5.2 miles south-west.
Upstreet is about 4 miles south-east of Herne Bay, in Kent. Upstreet gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. 922 places in Kent are on our list, from busy centres to quieter spots. There’s also a page for Maidstone, about 29 miles away.

Around Upstreet, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Grove Ferry Picnic Area, Spires Academy and The Grove Ferry Inn. The closest station to Upstreet is Sturry station, roughly 3.8 miles south-west of the centre. A little further out are St Martins Hospital (5.2 miles south-west). Not far away are West Blean and Thornden Woods.
Between visits
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.
What a clean will not put right
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:
- A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line
- Electrical faults in the canopy
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will tell you honestly before booking.
